If the Cards Extent Heyward for...

Well, Simmons was coming off of a very encouraging offensive season. BJ had one bad year so I bet the thinking was that it was just a fluke and he would bounce back. Why not roll the dice off of a successful season though?

By this logic, why not roll the dice with the team this season?

Because BJ sucked again and the farm system was a disaster. Then two of your three best players were about to walk in FA. Its pretty simple to me.

It made a ton more sense to rebuild after Minor, Beachy, and Medlen went down than it did after 2014, especially if you are right and the front office knew a rebuild was coming at the end of 2014.

I don't think the team ever really thought Beachy was an option honestly. He was more of a "Hey look at what we found" kind of addition. Santana was acquired to replace Medlen as you know. You can't rip down a 96 win team. That would be a wrong decision. They had to let it ride out another season. This year the decision was clear.

None of this makes sense if they really knew a rebuild was coming after 2014. They went for it in 2013 and didn't quite make it and that was the last season they should've ridden it out if they really knew. It makes more sense if they completely misjudged the team and made mistake after mistake and bad decision after bad decision (dating back to Uggla and BJ). That's what makes more sense. That's what it looks like happened. Either way, you have to seriously question the judgment of the front office.

I'm not sure a rebuild would have happened if the team was a 95 win team again in 2014. But again, another year of seeing a failed draft class had to have been the final straw along witht he disappointing major league club.
