I think the point doesn't have much to do with the greatness of the players in question. It can be applied to 2 players lower down the scale, where one has more of his overall value attached to his bat and the other more value attached to his defense and baserunning.
Has to be Simmons.
It just isn't that hard to find a corner OF or 1B that can provide offense.
I do find it amusing that folks freak out at the thought of trading an expensive closer in Kimbrel because he is the best at his position, but don't feel the same way about Simmons who has an order of magnitude more impact on the game than any other player on the roster.

Trout had two all-time good seasons hitting at age 20-21.
Not in the same stratosphere as Trout, not many are though.
Miggy's team has taken his team to 3 straight ALCS appearances and 1 WS appearance in the last 3 yrs. While Trout's team's have missed the playoffs for 3 straight yrs. May be there is a method to our madness.

For starters Trout didn't play much 3 years ago. But the real reason the Angels suck has nothing to do with their offense, and everything to do with pitching. Over the last 2 years the Angels are fifth from the bottom in fWAR while Detroit is at the tippy top in pitching. In fact the Tigers making it to the ALCS or the WS and not winning it the last 3 years despite having the best pitching in baseball maybe indicates that having the amazing hitter isn't all it's cracked up to be? You'd think best pitching+best hitterwould equal at least one ring by your logic. But the teams who've won the WS are (team fWAR rank and best hitter rank) Boston 3rd and 8th, San Fran 19th and 3rd, and St. Louis 23rd and 5th. Which goes to show what? That it doesn't matter because you just have to get in. I could keep going further back adn you wouldn't really find a trend. I'm sure you're looking at the hitter ranks and saying that's a trend but San Fran the year before they were at 11th, Yankees year before 14, Phillies year before 28th.
Hell last year we had overall the 10th best hitter, 7th best pitching, but we couldn't make it out of the NLDS vs the Dodgers who had 15th in pitching and no qualified hitters in the top 30 of hitting (Hanley mashed obviously but was hurt most of the season)
What all these stats really show you is that NOTHING matters when you get to the post season. Sometimes little ****s like COdy Ross become forces. Sometimes guys like Kris Medlen melt down.
What matters is getting to the post season, which thte better player over 162 games gives you the best shot at that.
Is it really fair to say that he has durability issues? An appendectomy and getting your jaw broke by a pitch aren't exactly the same as a bruised thumb/tweaked groin (both of which he suffered from in 2011.) Nevertheless, I'm curious as to whether or not that's a prevailing opinion about Jason.
I would give Heyward and Freeman 10 year pacts tomorrow.

Simmons should be the priority then Freeman. Personally hoping that Jason is traded. One of the most important and difficult positions to field is shortstop. Hope we can convince Simmons to sign an extension soon.

Sign them all Damn it! If we can lock up Freeman, Heyward and Simmons we should be good for a long time. As you guys nitpick who you would rather have, I was thinking we need all of them. If we only keep one, we will be terrible for many years to come. I am sick of this argument between Heyward and or Freeman. I think both players are great and we need both of the for many years to come.
