Members of this board are all too aware of the 2020 embarrassment that was Cole Hamels -- he of the one game pitched. Triceps and shoulder problems conspired to make his signing a non-event.
Not surprisingly, no one signed him as a free agent in the off-season, or even in the early going of 2021. So he and his agent threw together an open showcase/tryout on a field in Frisco, Texas, on July 16th. A total of 20 teams sniffed the air and read the radar guns.
The Dodgers bit. Hamels was signed to a $1 million contract with the idea of adding him to their late-season rotation. Stop me if you've heard this one before. Last week, Hamels suffered a "setback" while working out and will require ______-ending shoulder surgery. Fill in the blank as you see fit.
Monday, Hamels was placed on the Dodgers' 60-day IL. A million bucks for zero innings -- nice work if you can get it.
