If you were Frank Wren...

2. I would trade Gattis and a pitching prospect not named Sims/Hursh for Mookie Betts and Henry Owens of the Red Sox.

Not sure the Sox are this dumb.

Put Gattis at DH full time and he will hit 35+ homers every year. He was mashing the ball before he got hurt.

A lot of players can be a successful DH in the AL. Trading premium prospects for one is pretty dumb.

Do you really think that in today's mlb, one where offense has been severely diminished, that there are a lot of players who could produce the power that Gattis can?

Gattis is a career .256/.308/.493 hitter. Yes, I believe there are a lot of players that could put up those numbers as a DH in Boston.

This team is 0.5 games out of the final WC spot, and some of you are suggesting wholesale changes? Seriously?

Wren will look to add a solid starting pitcher, and a few starting options that are question marks. He will try to dump BJ and bring in another OFer to either play CF or allow them to move Heyward to CF. Extensions for JUp and Heyward will be attempted. Expect the bench to be VERY young next year with guys like Goss, Terdo and maybe CB taking a few spots, with one veteran bat brought in just for giggles. Personally, I would like to see Boni brought back and have a bench of Boni, Pena, Goss, Terdo, and CB. If Boni or Goss end up starting I would like to see a LHed thumper brought in to be the primary PHer.

Other than dumping BJ and acquiring an established starter (maybe Santana) there won't be any other impact moves made. This quite simply isn't a roster that requires wholesale changes, and the folks that think it does are clueless.

To add to previously said. Players you could probably have for less than Betts and Ownes.

Ruf 27 years old career .260/.353/.488

Duda 28 years old career .248/.342/.439

Van Slyke 27 years old career .243/.340/.464

Seth Smith 31 years old career .267/.349/.458

That just a couple guys off the top of my head that could be had for a lot less than Betts. Wouldn't make any sense. Its not hard to find all hit, no field guys that can put up a .800 ish OPS that you don't have to trade great prospects for.

Gattis wouldn't be doing much DHing in Boston till Ortiz retires. If any of those players mentioned could play passable defense at catcher they would be highly sought after. When he does become a full DH I think he will hit better because he won't have the stress of catching on his body.

Eh, if that guy stays healthy he will hit much better than that over the next 5 years.

For the record, there are 34 major league hitters (or slightly more than 1 per team) listed as having a minimum of 300 PA's so far this season with a wOBA higher than the .360 that Gattis is sporting so far this season.

So at least 34 when counting only guys with 300 PAs. :)

Made this a post a few days ago, but I think it is relevant here

Teheran - Keep
Santana - qualifying offer
Minor - Keep
Harang - Let walk
Wood - Keep

2/3rds of the rotation will need to be replaced. Doubtful they bring the Hurangatan back and Santana will probably get the multi-year deal

Kimbrel - Keep
Avilan - GET OUT!
Varvaro - GET OUT
Walden - Bring back
Carpenter- on the fence...
Hale - on the fence....
Russell - Trade

Bullpen has been in shambles all year long and by the looks of the list, would need a dramatic overhaul over the offseason

BJ - Dont let the door hit you in the ass on the way out
Heyward - Possible trade chip
JUp - Extebd
Freeman - Keep
LaStella - Keep
Simmons - See what he brings on trade
Johnson - Trade chip
Gattis - Trade

Lineup has flaws top to bottom, I don't know if there really is anyone who I would not at least entertain in a trade scenario

Doumit - Will be playing in someone else's minor league system next year
Gosselin - will be back either on our roster or AAA
Bonafacio - Keep
Laird - Let walk
Pena - Let walk

Hands down one of the worst benches in recent memory for the Braves. Would love to see Bonafacio back next year because of the speed he can bring to the game.

Cannot look at the roster top to bottom and not look at coaching staff. My father and I had this conversation a few days ago. Unfortunately, since the JS era began, we very rarely make major changes to the staff.

Gonzalez - Fire, duh
Fletcher - let go replace with Chipper
Walker - let go, replace with experienced hitting coach
McDowell - Keep
Tosca - Let go
Pendleton- in discussion for manager, eventually name manager
Dascenzo- let go, seen too many bad decisions on his end in the 3rd base coaching position

I'd like to see a small influx of some of our past players into leadership roles. Having Pendleton and Chipper in the coaches room would make it known that the type of baseball we are playing right now is not acceptable. Too many things happening that should not be because we are not focused.

BTW, if we fire Fredi with some of the season left can Bobby fill in for a few games?

Theoretically yes, Bobby could manage some games. Reality is Fredi won't be fired before the end of the season if even then.

Ok why exactly are you putting varvaro in the same category as Avilan. Luis has been BJ in the pen this year, whereas Varvaro has been pretty good.

He has not been great, in fact, he has given up inherited runs as well as his own in big spots

That's because he's a yet another reliever being misused by Fredi. Varvaro is great as a long reliever but when used in pressure situations he sometimes doesn't get the job done. It's been this year since last year but Fredi keeps using him in pressure situation. Although in Fredi's defense I don't trust anyone in the bullpen outside of kimbrel and walden in pressure situations

If Simmons were shopped what could realistically be expected in return?

Hard to say. Shortstop are a premium position. I think a swap for Starling Marte makes sense as well as trading BJ with Andrelton for Jose Reyes are fair deals. He has lost some shine to me but his extension really helps his value. The yankees are going to need shortstop so maybe we could fleece them.
