I’m beginning to think...

That we should trade one of Newk and Folty.

It’s not that I dislike either one, but both have a hard time going past five innings. I do not think it’s a successful model to have two guys like that in one rotation.

Folty would be my choice but has less control left.

Newk has more control and is a lefty. The thing that bothers me most....he melts (sometimes literally), in big games. His worst games have been his biggest games.

I think we need a Stroman, Archer type for next year with Folty, Touki, Wright, Julio/Sanchez for #5.

I'd keep Folty and trade Newcomb.

Guys I have interest in trading Newcomb for: Greinke, Stroman, Archer, Fulmer. Not saying one-for-one necessarily. More likely in the off-season than the trading deadline.

We have cash to spend as a result of the Kemp trade this off-season. Going after free agents is not necessarily the best way to spend it. We can use the cash to leverage deals where we trade someone low salary (Newcomb) for some high salary but higher quality as well.

Newcomb plus one of Allard/Wilson/Wright/Touki/Fried/Anderson/Wentz should you a pretty good pitcher. To me this is the best way to leverage the fact we have contracts coming off the books and a bunch of attractive pitching prospects. Newcomb has significant value because he's done something at the major league level (2.4 career WAR in 39 major league starts) and has 5 more years of control left.

I would trade Newcomb as well. Folty is one step away from an ace. His deficiency is mental and he's shown real signs of working on that this year.

The reason folks want to trade them is the reason they aren’t as valuable as folks think they are.

With all the issues the Braves have had with pitchers, why trade the only guys who haven’t been injured?

AA will keep the SP depth.

Why are we trading one of the guys who has proven himself to be a major league caliber pitcher rather than a prospect? I’m so confused. People were saying we couldn’t give up D Pete or Brett Cumberland in another thread but trading Newcomb is easy?

Weird. So weird.

I think someone would bite on a Newk/Allard package as headliners for say Archer.

I don’t think Newk has this massive value, I do think he holds value as a controllable lefty.

I have not said that. I think all of these Dpete/Wisler types should be moved.

Would like to give Cumberland a bit longer, but that’s about it.

I am still trying to figure out this love for Chris Archer, nothing about his past stats makes me think he is all that great. over the past 3 seasons he is basically average. Why would I give up 2 guys like Newcomb and Allard for his is just beyond me.

You are right...I wouldn’t...and I do not like Archer that much. I would take him over Allard. I meant to say in a package getting an ACE (like Degrom). I know it would take more than that of course.

I don’t know why I said Newk/Allard for Archer.

I honestly would like us to keep our young guys and see them develop, but we are about to run out of spots for them to even have a chance.

Archer has gotten a little underrated around here.

He's still a 3-5 WAR pitcher who is owed very little over his next three years of control.

In fact, he'll be cheaper at the end of his deal than Colon, Dickey, Garcia, McCarthy, Teheran, etc have been.

That plays in any rotation spot. Maybe he'll perform like a #2. Maybe he'll be a #4. Either way at 8.2 million it plays. He takes pressure off the Braves to rely on multiple young arms at the same time.

So the question is the trade cost.

My concern with Archer is that this year he is a 3 win pitcher who people still perceive as a 5 win pitcher, and would probably require a 6 win package. He's only gotten to 5 wins once but it seems like everyone believes he is that guy night in and night out. I can't understand it. I would much rather have Gray at half the price.
