Immigrants

I genuinely cannot believe the “populist” right is looking at a situation where workers can be overworked and abused because of their work visa and the only conceivable solution appears to be getting rid of the overworked and abused workers and hoping the companies don’t just find ways to overwork and abuse American STEM students.

You don't see how owning the visas artificially lowers wages for both the immigrant and the American?

Weak worker protections that allow employees to call any job an exempt salaried position that they wish and work those employees 60+ hours without Overtime Pay is the issue. Companies would not exploit that labor if they couldn’t legally do so.

Thanks but my question was you don't see how owning the visas artificially lowers wages for both the immigrant and the American?

It does, but I don’t agree with a solution to that problem that ignores the root cause and simply encourages finding new and exciting ways to let American STEM graduates get exploited by the same companies. I think closing the loophole on overtime exemptions would solve this particular problem quicker than closing the loophole on visas.

I'm glad to see some understanding that the immigration system exploits immigrants to the benefit of American employers. Immigrants are not complaining but it bears pointing out that this exploitation, which tales many forms, is an essential feature of many parts of b the economy.

Looking forward to the mass deportation and curtailment of the visa programs!

I love how half of the mob going after Vivek is clutching their pearls about his comments on the emphasis of sports and entertainment as a ghastly attack, and the other half is just perpetuating it outright. It’s even more fun that most of the usual grifters are somehow doing both.

It's not just the tech geeks. America farmers. Restauranteurs. The food industry. The landscaping industry. The child and elder care industries. And others. They all love their exploited immigrant workers.

Bannon and Maga are about to find out how much.

MAGA will soon realize that the tech billionaires shift to Trump was not them coming to the MAGA view of policy, but rather them figuring out they can get whatever they want from Trump if they kiss his ass.

Once they realize it, they will shift and explain why everything the tech billionaires are calling for is amazing and wouldn't be possible without trumps landslide. Any politician on the right who objects will be called a RINO and called to be primaried

Very true, it’s just a bit surprising how quickly some of these people took their masks off on what their vision of America First really is.

Trump is just going to subsidize the wages of American born engineers at great expense to the tax payer, it’ll be called something like MASA or Make America STEM Again and cost as much as student loan forgiveness would, but specifically push the money to companies to exploit their American workers instead of foreign ones. Maybe it’s time to get a STEM degree and let y’all pay for my livelihood.

Nah. In four years we'll have essentially the same exploitative system. It simply works too well for all concerned. We'll have a few performative stunts and that will be it.

Btw 80 hour weeks are normal for startups, regardless of visa status. The exploitative part comes in when you look at the fine print regarding ownership shares should the startup succeed. For some there is a potential pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Others not, except for the intrinsic value of participating in something like that. Which ain't zero. As I said the system works. And the exploitation is a feature not a bug.

I dunno, the one overriding fear I have of Donald Trump is that he wants to be the most special boy and if a combination of tech moguls and pro-protectionist idiots come together to offer the tech billionaires massive tax breaks to hire American, then stairstep those requirements down over the next 5 years until we’re back in the same place but with tech companies paying less taxes on their labor.

My objections to the system aren’t that there aren’t situations that call for exemption from hourly employment and a lot of innovation is fueled by these entrepreneurs working a lean operation to survive. But when the richest man in the world can claim he must exempt an accountant making $50,000 per year from overtime pay, maybe the system is ****ed up. I hope we don’t let the people exploiting that system to crush and acquire all their competition start shadow-running the government or anything.

Elon is mostly a troll nowadays but once in a while he has some thoughtful thangs to say.

Weird how quickly he stops responding with an “interesting” or laughing emoji to his favorite troll accounts once they started taking shots at a system that favors him economically. I thought he was a free speech absolutist. They didn’t get any more offensive in their posts, they’re just going after a group he doesn’t also want to get rid of.

You know what the buzz phrase is among those exploited tech workers.

It's "hook me up." Their model is to tolerate exploitation so they have a better seat at the table at the next startup. These are all consenting adults chasing their dreams.
