Senator Sassy Ben Sasse says White House aides told him Trump was delighted his supporters had breached the Capitol and was confused why others in the White House werent as excited about the chaos. Pretty much confirms what I thought from the beginning, Trump in even the best light wanted the optics of "Americans" storming the Capitol as "proof" that the election was not legitimate. Thats the best interpretation. Its becoming clearer along with Googliani's phone call that they legitimately wanted MAGA to intimidate Congress into changing their votes. I wasnt really expecting Trump to face any serious criminal legal issues over this but I have changed my mind. He could legitimately face insurrection related charges. Reports are the fear of criminal charges is why he gave his "concession" speech.

For those wondering if it’s worth impeaching him this time, it means he:
1) loses his 200k+ pension for the rest of his life
2) loses his 1 million dollar/year travel allowance
3) loses lifetime full secret service detail
4) loses his ability to run in 2024

////

and if I read it right, takes away the pardon power for his remaining time

I had no idea they got a million dollar a year travel budget. I think a conviction is still a pipe dream. No way enough Republicans Senators vote for it.

The latest Trumpkin argument against impeachment:

Holding the ringleader of the criminals responsible will anger the criminals and make them do more criminal actions, therefor we should not hold the ringleader responsible.

Law and order party indeed....

What a joke. Too bad it’s not funny.

I’ve already explained why they can’t. The psychology of the mark in a fraud scenario shows they have a very hard time admitting they were duped.

Trumpkins will find it even harder since they’ve heard how stupid they are nonstop for the last 5 years. Admitting to being fooled is admitting they are as stupid as we all claimed them to be.

This reminds me of a discussion I had with a chick who thought the 911 attacks were an inside job.

Her biggest bit of “evidence” was that since jet fuel burns at a temperature lower than the melting point of structural steel, there’s no way those fires caused the buildings to collapse. Therefor, explosives or something else must have been planted beforehand.

I informed her that blacksmithing has relied on the fact that steel weakens at temperatures below the melting point of steel for thousands of years, so steel doesn’t have to melt for a structure to fail.

That’s when the anger set in on her part. There was no way she was going to admit she was dumb enough to be fooled, so it turned into some odd ranting about things I can’t remember.

I see it as the opposite. If impeachment will cause terrorists to out themselves then we need to do it ASAP.
 
A guilty verdict, even with new and more damning evidence of guilt, is still a long shot. But I heard a good case that a not-guilty verdict might be even better for Dems because it will make Trumpers feel vindicated and cause further divide within the GOP. That sounds good to me.

Mitch isn't going to want that and surely these debates are already happening behind closed doors within the GOP. Now we've got 2 civil wars going on.

Apparently there's a lot more private support for impeachment and conviction in the GOP than public support. One article I read said there were probably well over 100 Republicans in the House that privately supported impeachment but who were too afraid of fallout from Trump supporters in their constituency to vote for impeachment.

There's probably enough support for conviction in the Senate to convict IF enough Republicans feel safe enough to vote to convict. Conviction is very possible. It'll be interesting to watch.

McConnell is hoping the moods ease after a few weeks so then they can play the "this is a partisan witch hunt" card.

Trump despite the antics still had like an 85% approval amongst GOP voters.
