International News, Rumor and Signing Thread

I'll admit it's messy and ugly right now but teams know that when they get him signed they can keep certain things under control. He's 16 and is being pulled in several different directions. Hopefully it doesn't affect him mentally.

Well, start at the beginning. He agreed to, or instigated having his nickname copyrighted for marketing purposes. Speaks to someone who, at this early stage, might be inclined to put his interests over the team's. Not a guarantee, of course, but the first red flag. The second is, that at his age, these "handlers"

aren't going away any time soon. The third is how little baseball he's played in the last two years -- a key time for development, you have to say. Combine that with the amount required to sign him, and as I said he sounds MORE LIKE a franchise killer than a savior. If they move heaven and earth to sign him, I hope to God I'm wrong.

The Braves have taken an honest run at him, and his dad refused to let him come to camp. Fine. Leave the offer on the table, but make your priorities the July signing hoard.

What does this mean? What team's interests would he be putting ahead of his own at this point? Would you bash someone like Jason Groome or Corey Ray for making decisions that help them personally because they are putting their interests over 'the team's'?

And in regard to having his nickname copyrighted, that was pretty clearly instigated by his former agent. He's 16, and his agent told him this was a smart move that would make him a lot of money down the line. And in fact, he might have been right. What is the issue with that?

'Franchise killer' is just an insane exaggeration. This situation is messy, and I'm not even advocating the Braves signing him at this point, but you're going way overboard.

I don't see how this changes him signing with the Braves.

His former agent wanted him to wait until July 2. The investor who allegedly threatened the agent's life wants him to sign now. The agent is gone, the investor is still around. That's not good for us...especially if you follow the logic that the investor probably went after the agent specifically so he could get Lazarito to go ahead and sign now.

Folks are acting like death threats are a routine part of negotiating and posturing. Time will tell, of course. But everything about this tells me that the family is dangerously over their heads with someone on the shady side of legal.

MLBTR is where I saw this, but they drew from several articles:

This situation with Lazarito’s buscon and Hairston is of an even more chilling nature, with Hairston declining to name the buscon out of concerns for the safety of Culture39 employees.

No one's acting like that. But first, Lazarito himself is not the one that allegedly made the threat. And two, there really is nothing in baseball, outside of signing a guy to a massive contract who immediately becomes terrible, that can be considered a 'franchise killer'.

As little actual baseball as he's played since he was, say, 13, this is something I consider as well. Like I said, time will tell.

The write up is almost exclusively about Cruz and Pache. Most notable thing to me was Badler writing that Cruz has a lot of similarities to Yankees SS prospect Mateo "but taller."

Thanks! But I was actually a little more curious about the other players that we signed not named Cruz/Pache/Morales.................. anybody have any info or blurbs on the other 20 kids we signed?

Ventura is the kid whose debut excited me last year. Surprised to see them say he has an "average" arm. since he had 14 assists in just 58 games. The 11 errors tells me he might be a high-powered for his own good, but not since Andruw have I seen more impressive combination of offensive and defensive numbers in a young player.

Ventura doesn't turn 19 until July.

There is very little. We exhausted our budget on Cruz/Pache/Morales, which means the others signed for peanuts. Maybe we will uncover a diamond in the rough in that group. We'll find out once play begins in the DSL and our roster there is put up.

He is an intriguing prospect. Given how well he did in the DSL, I could see him going to Danville rather then the GCL.

William Contreras, who caught for the DSL team last year, is another prospect I'm looking forward to seeing stateside.

Lots of really fun and interesting prospects to watch this year. I can't wait till to see who we pick up during the July 2nd period. With no news of anything on Lazarito I think we'll be major players for him as well.

That's my thought. If he was going to one of the teams that overspent he'd already have signed.

I can't shake this sneaking suspicion that the Braves are going to make a huge splash by adding Lazarito to their IFA haul on July 2nd.
