Is there any precedent for this? No chance he'll play DSL/GCL this year, so would it really be smart to push a 17-year-old international guy all the way to Rome at some point next year? I could definitely be wrong, just not sure how aggressive other teams have been with elite international guys like that.

Seems like the main comparison for hype was Sano. He signed in 2009, played DSL/GCL in 2010 and then only played rookie ball in 2011. He didn't see full season ball until 2012.

He's likely talking about all of the groundwork we've laid to get to this point, the handshake agreements with a bunch of top prospects and signing two elite players last year while staying within the limits so that we can potentially explode this year.

A lot of this has already been done. This is a plan the Braves FO has been putting together and executing for a couple years.

My point was simply quite a bit of this is already done; Derian Cruz and Christian Pache are two of the highest rated prospects we've ever signed and all of the logistical maneuvering to get those two and remain in the clear has already happened.

It could still go south if we lose Maitan and others, but up to this point; even you can't really complain about what we've done.

Lazarito/Ona would ask for around $5-7 million depending on if they think they're that good... That's around $16 million and we're suppose to spending as much as the Yankees ($17 million without penalties) so thats a total af around $60 million with penalites.. too much.

I could see us getting "the other guys" + maybe one of the players you mentioned, but I doubt 2.

You're wanting us to spend more than the Yankees, Red Sox, and Cubs.. and close to the Dodgers level.
That won't happen, why? 1) We don't have enough money and 2) Padres.
I'd be shocked if we get the prospects we're rumored to get, some more, and then Cubans..
 
The Braves scouting department and front office have done everything they set out to do over the past year plus. They masterfully worked the draft this year to get the guy they felt was the best pitching prospect in the draft along with two more high upside arms, and at least another two high upside arms in the latter rounds.

The J2 signing period they are about to embark on has been in the plans for the past year plus, ever since Gordon Blakeley took over the International Scouting department. They got two high upside bats last year in Christian Pache and Derian Cruz, and they are looking to blow it out of the water this year since this will likely be the last J2 signing period.

This is something the previous front office forgot about.
 
Anyone heard the Braves connected with Freudis Nova? He's a Dominican, rated 8th best, and not projected to sign with anyone yet by MLB.com

I agree - the Braves have planned this out masterfully; they still have to get the guys to sign on the dotted line; but it seems beyond likely that they are going to get a massive haul this summer, which coupled with Pache/Cruz is a hell of a talent infusion.

Forget the trades we've made, the talent Atlanta has brought in through the draft and international market the last two years is ridiculous.

Makes sense that guys are hesitant to put a 16 year old phenom over the 1:1 draft pick; but the fact that its a conversation speaks to the type of upside scouts think Maitan has.

IMO, the Braves have the best scouting department in all of baseball.

Moniak is a good prospect, but there is no way you would take him long term over Maitan.

Badler said this, Keith Law also said Maitan wouldn't have been taken in the top half of the first round. The two extra development years HS kids have over international kids is a big deal.

Where they rank should not be based on their current development. It should be based on their upside and potential long term impact. I could care less for the two extra development years of high school. This kid has more raw potential than any hitter that was drafted this year. This kid is an Andruw Jones level prospect, and no other bat that was drafted this year is at that level.

I don't think they are knocking Maitan at all; they're just saying we've seen Moniak and others play more and against better competition - there's a better feel for those kids. I tend to agree with them, teams would likely shy away from a 16 year old kid in the top of an MLB draft.

Regardless - the fact that he's 16 and would have very likely been a first round draft pick - possibly high first round draft pick - speaks volumes to how talented he is at that age. To add that into our system is a coup.

I don't know about that --- that they miscalculated so badly with Olivera gives me continual pause.... that being said, the results from last year's draft look very very good.
