Is Free Speech Under Attack in this Country?

Nazism, sure **** them, racism, I mean who knows. What's racist? Is it calling someone the N word? No let them get their ass beat. Are they committing violence? THen yeah.

You don't have to believe me, we're just strangers on the message board, but you're projecting **** based on nothing.

How about demonstrating for violence against minorities? Should our tax money go toward supporting that?

A couple of comments with words of wisdom.

I think it’s reasonable to ask what Columbia is doing to specifically ensure Jewish students are comfortable on campus. Ensuring students don’t wear masks and cracking down on speech and demonstration broadly is not essential to that ask.

But this is Chris Rufo himself who is making the claim Surowoecki is quoting. He’s essentially *the* voice in this particular movement, so when he says Universities should be moving away from activism to receive federal funding, his words align with actual aims of these policies. It’s not to protect students, it’s to depress viewpoints.

That's where you want to do huh? To me it look like the protestors were peacefully sightseeing.

Has anyone said they had “depressed viewpoints ?”
I never defended j6rs

I said it was dumb and unnecessary.

I don’t think they occupied for days and made demands though.

And those people got jail time - so I’m fine giving these unAmerican freedom haters the same sentence if you are. Deal?

How does this happen in a supposed Western democracy?

[tw]1904838668562370653[/tw]

If we want to talk about illicit civil asset forfeiture I’m happy to point to many, many cases of this happening in a Western Democracy.

Not sure why I’d be concerned with him losing his job, though. If I intentionally call someone at work something they don’t want me to call them, they fire me.

Except this was over free speech.

The dude is losing everything because he won't accept transgenderism and you do another stupid whataboutism.

Perfectly fine reason to be fired, unjustifiable reason to do anything else. But people have their assets stolen by Western Democracy even when they don’t commit crimes of the police suspect they might be doing a crime.

Look, I don't give a **** about your whataboutism. Do you understand that?

The guy is having his stuff taken away because he won't accept transgenderism.

You trying to divert this topic I brought up is pissing me off.

You do this nonsense constantly. Knock it off.

Which still revolves around the idea that he didn't accept transgenderism which got him fined in the 1st place.

Awesome retort.

If my job had a rule I have to do something. And I don't do it and I get reprimanded for it, it's their fault.

Got it.

I'm loving this pretzel logic of yours.

What was he fined for?

Not complying with what his job expected of him.

It's not pretzel logic. It's pretty sane. I quit a job because they required me to work 6am to 6pm. Had I refused to do that I would have been reprimanded. Because I didn't agree with that. I left said job.

He was fined and jailed for not accepting transgenderism.

His fines are over 65,000 pounds. That's probably hard for a schoolteacher to pay back so they start taking his assets.

I don't have an issue if fired from his job for breaking school policies here.

However, the government is targeting him with fines and jailtime for his stance on transgenderism which is an attack on his free speech.

If I keep typing this maybe you'll eventually get it but probably not.

Yet, you whined because we wouldn't let terrorist sympathizers on campus spread their filth.

What is this, Europe?

This is a discussion board and I have an opinion that differs from yours. Him being fined is unjust, him being fired is just.

No he was fined and jailed for trespassing.

"Although it is true that he was initially suspended from his school pending a disciplinary process over an alleged dispute involving a transgender student, this was not why he was later sent to prison. Enoch Burke was jailed for contempt of court after he breached a High Court order which forbade him from attending the school while a disciplinary review was carried out."

and

https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2022/0905/1320639-enoch-burke/

"Burke's school, Wilson’s Hospital in Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath, was granted an injunction preventing Burke from attending or attempting to teach after he was suspended pending the outcome of a disciplinary process.

Burke told the court he could not comply with the order as it would be in violation of his conscience."

"On Friday, the school was granted an order directing gardaí to arrest Burke and bring him before the High Court after the judge was told Burke was on the premises sitting in an empty classroom."

"Ms Mallon said Burke was at the school this morning when he was arrested by gardaí. She said they were not looking for Burke to be punished, they were simply looking for him to comply with the injunction."

This isn't a free speech issue, it's someone not doing their job and trespassing while suspended, a court injunction was given and he kept going to the school even though we was told he was committing a crime. Considering your stance on the pro-Palestinian protestors I find your take on this ironic.
