Is Free Speech Under Attack in this Country?

WAPO should not be treated as a news media outlet anymore.

They are consistently against American interests.

I can see why people might be leery of hate-speech laws.

But I can definitely see why the, er, Sellner family might really object to them.

White people can't value free speech and be passionate about it being upheld?

What are you trying to say here?

Georgia woman wins 100k after being falsely arrested and charged with criminal defamation for a Facebook post saying her ex-husband refused to get her kids flu medicine. The prosecutor said "just because it slegal does not make it right". Now 5 years later she is awarded 100k, the magistrate who signed the arrest warrant does not even have a law degree. The cops involved not only have not been charged they kept their jobs....

Weird, I feel if different players were involved this would have made it to this thread

Again, it seems the watchers of “freedom” somehow didn’t get outraged over this though.

I wonder why

I read that op-ed. It was terrible. His premise is that the idea that truth or the best viewpoints will prevail is wrong. His justification is the misinformation campaigns you see on social media. He calls the ideas underpinning the first amendment antiquated and for a world the founders could have never envisioned.

The problems with his argument are numerous and varied. First, his approach is far too micro. He looks at individual instances of speech with little worth and tries to use them as justification to tear down the whole rule. Essentially, since a Russian troll can abuse our freedom of speech and misinform people or because hate speech can cause problems, our freedom of speech is the wrong course. This is letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. Freedom of speech isn't perfect. The question is whether it's better than the alternative.

That leads to the second point. Is the alternative better? He completely ignores the possibility of abuse of restrictions on the freedom of speech. The same mechanisms you can use to shut down a Russian troll or punish hate speech can be applied to perfectly legitimate speech. This was a huge fear when the Constitution was written and the tools available to the government now are even scarier than when the first amendment was written.

I could go on at length. Suffice to say I'm a huge advocate of free speech.

Is this the most blatant example yet of free speech being under attack?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nati...nded-performing-nazi-salute-disturbing-photo/

Three employees with West Virginia’s Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation have been fired and 34 others suspended without pay a day after a photo emerged showing more than 30 participants in a basic training class performing a Nazi salute.

What's disturbing part isn't just that they wanted to take this photo whether it was for ****s and giggles or not, it was the fact they all wanted this as their official class photo.

If you hate minorities or black people specifically there is no better profession to go into than law enforcement and prison guard. These guys shouldn't be fired. We knew this is what they were about. The only people in denial about that are their employers.
