Is Free Speech Under Attack in this Country?

You really think the FCC made a phone call? Or is it far more Likely that Disney was already sick of Kimmel and used the Nextstar news as a reason to keep the blood off thier hands?
Bro lol

Brendan Carr isn’t even asking you to go to bat for him. He’s on the record TODAY that the FCC pressured ABC to let go of Kimmel

100% Trump admin was involved in this. Trump has sued multiple 'news' outlets (SUCCESSFULLY) so these are effectively continuations of the same conversations on settlement of claims.

Yup, late night TV used to be a thing to just do. Now you can stream anything in the world. I could watch some late night content I don't care about, or King of the Hill, seems like an easy choice for me.

You're also right about access. Back in the day people didn't have access to stars like they do now, Now you can see their curated PR on Instagram. You can see them on Hot Ones or Chicken Shop Date, etc.

I don't reallyy agree with you about what made Leno and Letterman last. What made them last was quality writers and the right fanbases.

Craig Ferguson was great and should still have his show but that also counters your other point. Ferguson was a known actor before his late night show. The Drew Carey show was much bigger than the man show ever could be.

Also I'd add I think the issue is that the shows aren't geared towards modern audiencies. Clips, big moments, etc. do well. But I actually think the bigger problem these shows have vs. their older counterparts is lack of other comics. Johnny Carson used to regularly have comics on the show and their cross banter with guests made for great TV.
Ferguson did late late for 7 years I think.

And his formula was so different from everyone else. His interviews often had zero to do with promoting movies or music. He would just flirt and talk to guests and make them laugh.

The best is when he’d have frlllow British comedians on and they’d just shoot the shit about anything.

While I enjoy reading the whataboutism, the one conclusion that cannot be disputed is that the 1st amendment is no longer an important part of modern politics.

Asia has never cared. Europe has regressed at hyper speed. Latin America jails political opposition. Canada debanks dissidence. The US had an opportunity to be a shining beacon on the hill, but it’s clear now that we’re in a race to the bottom.

What a disgrace to the founding principles of this country.

Read the first post of this thread.

It started culturally. Our society got their feelings hurt about speech they didn't like. It became socially acceptable to punish people who don't self censor. That was why many were concerned that free speech was under attack

Then it bled into the government for things like public safety (covid).

Now it's with the government for speech it doesn't like.

It's gonna get worse

I read the first couple pages and it’s made me so sad. It’s a rare occurrence on this board where basically everyone acknowledged the problem and worried about the slippery slope we were walking on.

Seven years later we have folks actively celebrating government speech suppression.

Covid really broke us

Its a very simple argument for me.

Do I think if the left ever gets back in power they will restrain themselves? We all konw the answer to this.

We are not in normal times right now for normal arguments.

Well what is the answer to this Chop. Do you think the modern version of the left in this country will restrain themselves if ever in power again?

That isn't a factor to consider here at all?
One problem though is nothing Trump has done so far is built to last beyond his term. There needs to actually be legislation passed for anything to have staying power

I will also say - Trump has been much more kind that I would have been under similar circumstances

I also tend to agree with this viewpoint.

If one side (my side) just wants to be left alone, and the other side wants to destroy everything I like... that is not a sustainable partnership for me

I have no faith the Left will restrain itself when back in power regardless of what the Right does. So the Right should while in power:

Pass laws that protect speech
Defang the executive branch
Prosecute those that violate free speech rights

This is an example where you don’t have to “do nothing”. You can carry a sword to protect citizens rights

yes.

nothing he's doing has any staying power but has created nightmare precedents

It’s still very early. More has to be done for sure. Identifying the billionaires funding antifa is key.

2/3 are happening

The crushing blow the Right can deliver to the Left is before the end of Trump’s term, the Republican Congress passes a wave of legislation that strips the Executive Branch of emergency powers, limits the scope of executive orders, and guts federal agencies. Even if we have President AOC, she will not have legal authority to do anything without congressional approval.
