Is Free Speech Under Attack in this Country?

I read the first couple pages and it’s made me so sad. It’s a rare occurrence on this board where basically everyone acknowledged the problem and worried about the slippery slope we were walking on.

Seven years later we have folks actively celebrating government speech suppression.

Covid really broke us
Where do you think society started deciding free speech shouldn't be protected?

There are two big ones to me

Academia - college kids and college educated are against free speech protection at a much higher rate than non

Declining white population. Last I saw, white people are the only racial demographic that majority supports absolute free speech protection

Ferguson did late late for 7 years I think.

And his formula was so different from everyone else. His interviews often had zero to do with promoting movies or music. He would just flirt and talk to guests and make them laugh.

The best is when he’d have frlllow British comedians on and they’d just shoot the shit about anything.
That's because he largely made it like Panel Shows in the UK.

Which is largely what Carson did. There still were bits and scripts and so on so forth, and it's why I love Conan, he would shoot the shit for 5 minutes than do promo for 2.

The internet, social media in particular, has changed fundamentally society’s relationship with speech. Picking one specific moment that has led us to our current landscape, it was probably when facebook launched the news feed and the personal became societal. Prior to that you could be Wilbo and Gatom and say literally anything on a message board and only us weirdos here would even hear about. Now any post on any platform could theoretically became national news and we are just not equipped to deal with that.

Without a doubt it’s this.

We can quibble until we’re red in the face what symptoms of this phenomenon have been most destructive, but communicating without the face to face filter has been corrosive

Ignoring the part of the picture that represents the lefts incredibly ability to be offended by anything and everything feels like missing a big part of the puzzle.

Yes the right is now employing the same tactics. Just without the homocidal tendencies.
