Is Free Speech Under Attack in this Country?

Agreed. I literally took a course called “radical multiculturalism” as an undergrad and read kooks that I’d imagine were way more out there than Ibram X Kendi, and look how I turned out. And it was taught by a self described lesbian Chicano woman, so this was the real deal, lol.

I’ve often said it’s liberal students who are done the most disservice in school because they can get through it without ever having their worldview challenged (maybe other than exposure to thinkers even further left than they are).

Marx belongs on reading lists. It would be nice if folks like Adam Smith and FA Hayek found themselves on those lists too.

For sure Adam Smith + Hume + Mill + Bentham

and the greatest of them all Thomas Hobbes (i vividly remember the professor who taught that class was pretty far left but he had a great appreciation for Hobbes)

and Kant

but reading Ibram Kendi won't kill anyone

Bart Ehrman at my wife's alma mater is a good example of using critical theory as a stick in the theology department. He basically tears Christianity down as fraudulent because, wait for it, the only accounts of Christ's miracles are written by his followers.

His justification is that critical theory says everything has to be examined through the worst possible assumption, so the worst possible assumption about Christianity is that Christ was a fake. This reasoning skips right over Saul of Tarsus going from a life of persecuting Christians to becoming one of the 2 or 3 most influential Christian leaders after encountering Christ's divinity. Wouldn't it be natural for anyone who witnessed the Resurrection, the Ascension, or even miraculous healing of the sick and blind, or restoration of Lazarus, to believe Christ was divine? Of course it would. But that immediately invalidates those people's testimony when viewed through Ehrman's lens of critical theory. The only proof he's looking for is testimony of those events from people who witnessed them but deny they were miraculous. His outcome was decided as soon as he settled on his method of questioning.

Thankfully Mark Goodacre is 8 miles away up 15-501 at your alma mater and taking a much more rational approach to studying and teaching the New Testament.

Has some thoughts about people trying to shut down debate

You guys doing the never been there before touchdown dance over Miley's comments can calm yourselves down.

Milley, like CNO Gildan and the rest of his 4 star brethren, is a survivor of the Obama era GOFO purges. He wouldn't still be in uniform if he hadn't been deemed acceptably progressive, and he wouldn't last long now if he revealed that was no longer the case.

That's the problem with the Progressive religion, and why being aware of O'Sullivan's Law is so important. Once true believer progressives get control of something they typically do irreparable harm to it, like they have here.

Milley's comments about the importance of keeping an open mind and learning about opposing views are pretty vanilla. It is a sad reflection of our times that this is tantamount to a rebuke of a large segment of our society.

One of my son's friends just left for boot camp with the Marines. I've gotten to know him a bit (we bonded over a pushup challenge, he did five for every one of mine). He has some trumpophilic leanings. I'll keep everyone posted on how the Marines are brainwashing this young man.

You're honest enough to recognize that he wasn't making an academic argument, he was offended by the shade being thrown on his religion. It's okay to recognize that opposing views should be understood AND that some of them are dangerous and have been given too large a megaphone.

I understand CRT via researching it. Thanks to not having it dictated as The Truth to me at an impressionable age by an authority figure in the military, I also understand that it's self serving, racist, nonsense.
