Is Olivera for Real?

And a pretty bad April. Facts be stubborn things.

Oh no a bad month! He's toast. Bring in the bulldozers!

I haven't looked it up but the article says he was hitting .262? He finished much worse so id say the thumb issue was a net negative on his season

It's not crazy to look at how Jace was hitting before the thumb and then after it. Sure, he was fine immediately after, but who knows how it lingered or what happened the rest of the way? there's still a lot to be determined with him and I'm not convinced either way.

I'm actually ok with giving Jace most of the playing time at second. He has more upside than the other candidates on the roster. But I think the combination of age as a rookie and overall performance both in the majors and minors suggests he's probably not going to be the kind of player that a contending team would want out there everyday. I'd say the odds of his being that kind of player are 10-20%. Not zero. So send him out there since we are not a contending team and the alternatives have less promise.

I don't think many people are of that opinion including me. I think he can be a great sub at a lot of positions if we needed it. After all solid clubs have great depth more times than not. I also don't like to write someone off as a farce because they hurt their thumb and played through it.

I'm optimistic about Olivera. I think he could be an Alex Gordon type offensively. There's always going to be a debate because the FO oversold him and fans made a rash judgement. Like most debates there will be a logical point in between.

Luckily, I get being frustrated, but I don't think Peraza will be very much long-term and Alex (I know it's spring) is looking rough.

I think one of the reasons we kept Alex in relief in the beginning was the fact that he gets by on his funky delivery and deception. It might be being exposed now.

I like Peraza, but speedy utility players who don't draw many walks like the Emilio Bonifacios of the world are always out there for the taking when you need to add one to the bench.

I'm out here on the Coast watching the Angels and Dodgers, and Woody is throwing 93-94 and twice touched 95. He looks very good. Lots of separation between 4-seam, 2-seam and change. He's given up a bunch of hits, many of the seeing-eye variety.

He's still got some worrying aspects to his game. Biggest concern is that he almost never walks. That has to change or he's not going to keep it up.

The lack of power is a real concern considering hes a left fielder.

His swing still needs a ton of work. He's still wrapping his bat bad.

Olivera's having a great spring but he's still a big time work in progress.

That's great to hear though. A work in progress 30 something year old rookie. Maybe by the time he's in mid 30s he will have figured it out?

Your concern is valid, except that we've been hit with several contrary reports about Olivera this spring. Sources I trust say he has actually cut down on his swing, but from time to time had to be reminded; that's what spring is for. Get back to me on May 1 and let's see how much he's struggling!
