Is There Anyone Out There...

I guess what I'm asking is :

Base salary of 21.5

Dodgers 3.5

Net 18 m.

I do understand the sunk cost frame of another 6 million so that takes you to 12 million more in payroll.

( I don't see the relevance of the sunk cost to the separate decision to take on kemp. That's to me the front office's way of putting a frame on the trade that makes taking on the salary more appealing, but it is really just a decision to pay kemp whatever they will pay him as opposed to just cutting Ollie. Which is fine, I don't know that I hate the decision. (Also the front office presented the math disregarding the increase to this year's payroll which was a bit more framing, but nothing major))

I think there has been some confusion in my reading of the reports whether Padres were sending an additional 3 million cash or not. I thought the reporting concluded that they didn't.

So I have it at 12 million more and that's my only remaining confusion about the trade.

The initial reports were 10-12 million that the Padres were sending us. But it came out that what they were sending us was the money they were getting from the Dodgers. So we assumed all of the Padres responsibility for Kemp's contract. IMO the big take away from all of this (payroll wise) is that it frees up 8 million in 2020. Which conveniently will be the year that Swanson/Albies likely hit arbitration for the first time.

Right... The rest of the difference is in Olivera's contract being for an additional year.

Right. In a way they front loaded that to make room for what is hopefully a big arbitration number for at least one if not both of them. No idea if they even thought of this but it likely will come into play.

I'm thoroughly stunned the Kemp 8.5 million per year math is this hard for people.

Simply take Olivera out of the equation (and pretend we DFA'd him). The Padres are taking all but 3 years 27 million of Kemp's salary. It really is that simple.

I think we are saving 3.14159 million on the salary from the Dodgers/Friars.... and we all know Kemp is on a diet so that can't be right.. That is why math is hard..

I was looking at kemp's actual yearly salary rather than the average cost of the deal.

Braves spend additional 12 million through 2019, but shed 8 million in 2020.

I don't think that until they start running those washed up scrubs out there. De La Cruz and this guy? Come on
