It was 13 years ago today? Thirteen! Braves fans lost Skip.

Shocker to me that it was 13 years ago today that Skip Caray passed away (August 3rd). What bring it home to me is that I was working part-time at our Braves outlet station as a producer for Chris Goforth's show. Skip was a guest by phone only a couple of weeks before he died, but he was great if low-key and I had a chance to wish him well before we ended the phone call.

Chris and I both kick ourselves that we didn't record it. It might have been Skip's last interview.

At the same time, it's a little creep that Skip (2008), Pete (August 2, 2014) and Ernie (August 12, 2011) all passed away in August. And, truth be told, I nearly died in late August of 2019.

Nobody will be happier to celebrate Labor Day than me.

Glad to still have u around buddy!

Once upon a time back in the 80's I had the misfortune (only that particular nite) to sit at the next table from Skip at Pano's and Paul's (supposedly Skip's favorite) restaurant. I asked Skip what he recommended from the menu. His response was the deep fried lobster. Worse meal Ive ever had at a premium price. If Im fortunate enough to see Skip again in the after life I owe him my criticism for the lobster but my ever lasting pleasure for his (and Ernie's and Pete's) announcing.

What I miss most about Skip is that although he worked for the Braves and wanted them to do well, he was the most unbiased sportscaster of recent vintage when it came to assessing his team's performance. If you listen to enough radio of the various franchises, the announcers today are homers to such an excessive degree that it is almost comical. I remember watching a lot of Braves' baseball in TBS during the Chuck Tanner era when the team was really, really, really bad and Skip had no problem pointing that out on a nightly basis.

"The bases are loaded, and I wish I were too."

"This game is so out of hand, it's perfectly ok to go ahead and turn this off. Just be sure to patronize our sponsors"

Neither of those is exact, but what fond memories of when we stunk in the 80's ... Skip always made me smile.

Skip:"Here I am at the bottom of another fifth and the Braves are down ten runs."
Ernie:"Skip, it's only the fourth inning"
Skip:"Yeah, I know."

"There's a big breasted blonde standing up, blocking the view of paying customers who...don't mind at all."

Skip was one of the best ever. He belongs in the Hall of Fame along with Pete and Ernie.
