I’m not sure ditching the salary in 2019 would have been my highest priority at the time but it’s turned out to be maybe the more important opportunity cost of not making a deal than any foregone (middling?) prospects.

Gohara was gonna be in the rotation till injury. Hard to say he's been passed by when gohara is just getting his feet back under him

Not sure I’d call Bradley, Jr and Benintendi “middling” ...

If they want to try Allard as a lefty reliever I guess that could work but I don’t see the rotation spot for him barring injury.

That likely requires giving up on Newcomb, Gohara, Folty in rotation.

I suppose you could make the argument for that but would be a surprising move.

At the time, folks were noting that his stuff was already in decline, and he was unlikely to be productive in 2017, much less 2019.

Cashing him in was just as much about getting prospects as it was avoiding the exact scenario we are witnessing now.

I never saw either reported with any degree of reliability.

If either had been offered he’d probably be gone. Well maybe not Bradley. I love him dearly but not sure I’d have targeted him for the Braves.

I thought the consensus would be that he’d probably still be worth his salary in 2019 as a fourth or fifth starter.

in hindsight, i wish we made a deal. i know many called for it at the time. but i think also at the time, there was a fair and reasonable argument for keeping him.
 
Back to Soroka...

The actual results of this start are virtually inconsequential. I will be looking in earnest for a few things:

1. A Grade 60+ SI, meaning ~94 MPH through 80+ pitches with 8"-9" of arm side run and less than 6" of rise.
2. A Grade 50+ breaking ball.
3. Flashes of a Grade 50+ CH.
4. No stretches of 4-5 consecutive pitches where he completely loses control.

I was for it at the time; but, in hindsight, unless they were dealing him to AZ, I doubt Hart/Copt would’ve extracted good value for him in a trade anyways.

Given the Kemp deal, I’d like to think Anthopoulos is the man to clear his salary if he deems it useful to do so.

That was the consensus of his upside, completely ignoring the risk inherent with keeping a pitcher for 3 noncompetitive seasons.

There was no good argument for keeping Teheran. It was a terrible decision the moment it happened, not because he is no longer very good. We didn't even need hindsight in this case.

It is simply poor asset management to waste a pitcher's value and carry the risk of injury/decline when a team is guaranteed to lose. Keeping Freeman wasn't optimal, but it was defensible because he is a position player less likely to see his value go to zero...and luckily the Braves have realized the best case scenario with him.

Unlike some of these digressions, this is both a valid question and very relevant to the current roster situation. I get the frustrations recently, but don’t hypercorrect.
