J-Hey & Simba win Gold Gloves; Update- Heyward Defensive Player of the Year.

Clique Leader
According to DOB twitter. Which you can find by googling David O'Brien Braves twitter.

Not a huge shock, but good for them.

Theyre also 2 of the 3 finalists for the NL platinum glove award. U can vote on it till tomorrow night.

Defense is not that important. Certainly not as important as grit, clutchness, veteran leadership and a fourth attribute whose name escapes me at the moment.

Kinda a no brainer on both counts. Lets just hope they score some dang runs next year. Both guys have room to move forward with the bat.

In the history of baseball, no game has been won without scoring a run.

But congrats to both these guys.

Wilson named both guys the best defensive players at their positions and also named Heyward as their Defensive Player of the Year

I remember Heyward ' s scouting reports saying he would lose his speed because of how big he is and that he would only be an average defender in right. They seemed to think he could be a gold glove defender at first though.

defense is clearly so important that it makes not scoring runs not matter. oh wait.

you can win 9 gold gloves but if you can't score, you'll still suck. this complete overvaluing of defense is the most ridiculous trend in all of sports.

Of the 10 teams to make the playoffs this year, their overall rankings in runs scored were: #1, #2, #4, #6, #8, #9, #10, #12, #14, and #24.

obviously there is much more to anything than one set of numbers, but the nuttiness of heyward's supposed value is off the charts. defense will never be as valued as highly as it is right now. the braves would be crazy not to trade him.

Adding offense will add to your runs scored indefinitely...to infinity. Adding defense can only get you down to whatever the minimum number of indefensible runs scored would be. That is the mathematical hole in the "defense first" philosophy.

The problem is that you can't defend the runs scored against you down to 0, but you can certainly score 0 runs (as evidenced by the Braves last year).

Scoring runs is important. Preventing runs is also important. Which is how the #24 and #14 teams in runs scored actually made the playoffs. The Cards and Royals were 2nd and 4th in team defense. The Braves? 3rd. Players that are both plus in creating runs offensively and preventing runs on defense are going to be valuled highly as they should. This is nothing new. Take Heyward off of the Braves and we are one of the worst teams in the league.
