As great as Jace has been in the leadoff spot ironically he has a .316 OBP with a .636 OPS batting with no one on base and over a 1.000 OPS with men on base, RISP, and RISP with 2 out. It's like we have a whole team that can hit with runners on base but suck with no one on base.

This is the second time I've heard the Lofton comparison in regards to Smith, so I guess that's good news. I think that's a bit unfair to Smith though. I am not expecting him to be like Lofton. I'm hoping he will be Michael Bourne.

When we first traded for Smith the comps were to Bourn, then later Lofton became the comp too. The scouting report by McDaniel notes the Braves brass comparing him to Bourn rather than Lofton.

Here's the quote from it: "Braves officials seem higher on Smith than Padres officials were, with multiple Braves execs comparing Smith to Michael Bourn and expressing no concerns over his hit tool."

BTW, since this is a Jace Peterson thread I'll add that Peterson was ranked 19th on the Braves prospect list at Fangraphs, here's what it says about him:

"Peterson was acquired in the Justin Upton deal and the former college football player at McNeese State has a chance to contribute to the Braves in 2015. Peterson was an under-slot bonus sandwich round pick in 2011 and he may not even have a 55 tool, but he makes the most out of what he has. His average or so speed plays up on the bases and in the field; he came up as a shortstop, but fits better at second base and third base, where his defensive tools profile. Peterson doesn’t have huge bat speed, power or even the prettiest mechanics, but he has a good approach at the plate, works counts in his favor and gears his in-game swing for contact over power, with a good approach versus lefties. He would have to really outplay his tools to become an everyday player, but he’s consistently played better than his tools and can contribute at multiple premium positions."

I think that's fair to him. Obviously he may never realize it, but it's more realistic. The thing about Mallex is that his speed makes him incredibly exciting. The fact that he appears to have a good idea at the plate makes me think he has a small chance to really be something special.
