A federal judge just ruled that he’ll stay locked up in jail until his trial.
Not sure why we’re celebrating this, friend. Unless he also assaulted someone on his way in, I think that holding him until trial is wrong, despite thinking he’s an idiot who is guilty of his crime. Criminal justice reform needs to apply to people we disagree with.
So that’s still a no on him actually bringing physical harm to someone, right? I’m not saying the guy shouldn’t be held accountable in a court of law for his crimes. I’m just saying that the criminal justice system is ****ed and not allowing him the right to return home pending trial is wrong, just as it is for thousands of people each year.

Let's put it this way. If I find a guy in my office with a stun gun and his feet up on my desk, I'd want him to be locked up while waiting trial. If further the police finds when they go to his house that he has disposed of evidence potentially relevant to the case, I would feel even more strongly he should be locked up.
And all that is setting aside the issues concerning disruption of our process for counting the electoral votes.
The only people I'm inclined to some leniency for are those who milled around in the rotunda being goofy tourists. Everyone else I'd want the book thrown at, including pre-trial detention.

Eric Munchel was photographed inside the Capitol on Jan. 6 wearing tactical gear and carrying plastic zip-tie handcuffs, one of many images that day that raised questions the FBI is probing about how thoroughly some insurrectionists planned for violence and what they hoped to do. He was arrested on Jan. 16. A week later, a judge in Tennessee ruled he could go home pending trial.
Prosecutors had argued to keep Munchel — one of the few defendants to face a felony conspiracy charge so far, along with his mother — in custody. They noted he was also accused of bringing a Taser into the Capitol and was allegedly recorded talking about stashing other weapons nearby. After the Tennessee judge ordered home detention, they raced to stop his release, petitioning a federal judge in Washington, DC, to intervene; they said the FBI found an “arsenal” of 15 firearms at his home and noted that he told a reporter he was prepared to “fight if necessary.” The DC judge agreed to halt Munchel’s release, and he’s still in custody pending another hearing.

I agree with the idea of saying screw them in general. Trust me, I would find very little common ground with this particular idiot. I still think the way we handle bail and the pre-trial process is absolutely absurd and unacceptable, though. Sure, this genius decided to commit a very dumb and very public crime, and unless he has one hell of a lawyer, will be found guilty of what they’re charging him with. However, I feel that criminal justice reform isn’t an a la carte sort of deal. If I say this guy should stay locked up, it’s really hard to argue against the next time someone is held without bail for participating in a less idiotic protest.

These are not garden variety protesters. They are armed insurrectionists who were hunting for congressmen to harm. That's the lens through which I view this matter. Doesn't matter that they also turned out to be a bunch of feeble minded idiots. I don't favor leniency on grounds of being an idiot.

There is a big problem with how we handle bail and pre-trial detention and honestly the best and quickest way to get that reform is for conservatives to experience it themselves because they champion this ****. Criminal justice reform is kind of my thing, but I want these lunatics in jail awaiting trial. He should probably get a mental health evaluation but Conservatives would cry about treating the QAnon election fraud hoaxers as a mental illness. This guy is clearly still delusional and his arrest hasnt given him any mental clarity like some of those others. Thats and not finding his weapons is a great reason to keep him behind bars. Like you said, he was caught red handed and is obviously going to prison. He will get credit for this jail time so its not like he is serving 1 day extra.
