January 6th insurrection thread...

The righteous indignation is pretty laughable. This commission is not about finding out why this happened. The Democrats don't even care if the commission happens or not. It's just a political ploy.

The Democrats are essentially forcing Republicans into a no win situation. They oppose the commission the Democrats attack them exactly like this guy. They allow the commission and the commission spends the next two years dragging every Republican it can through the mud and keeping this issue in the news.

Anyone who acts outraged by this is either 1) a gullible follower, or 2) manufacturing outrage.

The bill called for the commission to turn in its report December 31, 2021. Arguably they should have more time. But it certainly does NOT allow them to spend the next two years digging and dragging. I think one of the reasons the Republicans have opposed it is they don't want McCarthy and others who interacted with very poorly chosen one that day to have to testify about those interactions. I'm not sure that a congressional committee can compel testimony from other members of Congress.

By the way a good bit of the outrage is coming from Republicans like Senator Murkowski.

If the commission was approved and turned in their report by year's end, that would not be the end of it. That would just be step one. The next phase would be investigations into specific individuals (members of congress, former administration officials, etc).

The riot at the capitol is no great mystery. You even have the Justice Department investigating. A commission is nothing but political theater. It's a good political move by the Democrats.

As for Murkowski, don't for a second believe her outrage. She's an expert politician. She's clawed out her position as being a centerist that's not beholden to the party. Alaska has ranked choice voting which favors someone who is acceptable to both sides of the aisle. If she became too beholden to the Republican establishment then someone would grab that center spot and oust her. This is a perfect chance for her to break ranks and show outrage.

I don't believe Will Hurd is running for anything. But I guess he is positioning himself for a future race. Or he might be saying things he sincerely believes.

You think a 43 year old former congressman has no more political ambitions?

Also, the GOP is in the middle of a civil war. The establishment wing, of which Hurd is a member, wouldn't be sad at all to see the Trump wing crash and burn and have their spots retaken by the establishment again. They'd like to see some of these Trumpers in safe districts get primaried and so wont mind a commission that will spend between now and the election next fall dragging them through the mud. So again, it's all politics.

No one out there with any political savvy is outraged by this because they know that the commission has nothing to do with finding the truth about the riot.

I'd be surprised to see Will run for anything in Texas anytime soon. He's a political animal like anyone else. But that doesn't preclude him giving honest answers to the questions of the day. When he speaks of the decay of truth in the party, he ain't making something up that the rest of us (non gaze averting division) don't see with our own eyes.

I have no doubt he's talking about the Trump wing. I'm sure he detests where they've taken the party. I could easily see him supporting the commission just because he thinks it will do damage to them.

But no one is outraged about this as an attempt to suppress the truth of what happened. The righteous indignation over this is a show. There is absolutely indignation over other things, this commission just isn't one of them.

Well, I just goes by the things people say. Not in a position to get into their heads to say if they faking something. The comments by Murkowski and Hurd did not light up my disingenuity radar.

I might be cynical. Everything a politician says lights up my disingenuity radar.

No big deal. Fulton county employing high profile white color criminal defense lawyers.

We know why.

New defense attorneys legal strategy coming into focus.

Those ballots alone must be devastating. It’s not just about the presidency anymore.

I literally thought about not posting it

But the sentiment of why he doesn’t want it is accurate and thus why I did

McConnell absolutely doesn't want the commission because of 2022. Where Mr Sulu errs is 1) thinking the commission would actually be bipartisan and 2) thinking that the commission is about getting to the truth.

Let the Justice Dept get to the bottom of everything that happened. The commission is just about politics.

Anyone want to take a stab why at the last minute before the ballots were going to be scanned under high resolution that high profile defense lawyers were retained and motions filed to delay the inspection for a month?

Do you guys honestly not see what’s about to happen? Many state legislatures are finally listening to their voters to learn how 2020 was stolen. This is not about the presidency. This is not about the senate. This is about living in a country where the people can feel comfortable that the voting process is accurate and transparent. When one party is fighting against transparency at every turn you need to question why.
