Johnny Cueto

Last time I checked, that elite baserunning is a factor included in measuring the fact that he's the 16th best offensive player in the NL (not even baseball).

The Braves finished 13th defensively, even with Maybin in CF, CJ, KJ, Olivera, and Garcia at 3B, and a mix-and-match group in LF.

How about trying to fix the offense first? Shelby Miller lost 16 straight games with an ERA that was below 3.10.

How is adding Heawrd not fixing the offense? You realize only Freeman would of been better this year, right?

If that "cheaper $/WAR" means you spend $25 million per on one position and wind up with a below replacement-level player at one or two others, isn't that counterproductive???

Sure. So is spending 13 million a year on a 3 WAR player and watching them go to below replacement level status. The whole idea of replacement level player is that there are a ton of them around and shouldn't be too hard to find. But if your team wants to play a Dan Uggla instead of LaStella because one makes more money and is a veteran then there is nothing you can do about that kind of stupidity.

Yeah - but 30 year old Matt Weiters (carrer wRC+ of 98; last year was 100) and 30 year old Dexter Fowler (career 107 wRC+; last year 110 last year) will fix the offense!

The 26 year old Heyward (career wRC+ of 118; last year was 121) is a crazy way to spend our money!

Remember someone said Heyward was a joke offensively in 2014 with his 110 WRC+. Fowler and Weiters must be worse than that.

Yes that our dear friend thethe as he was simultaneously praising the offensive contributions of Nick the Stick (107 wRC+)

But, but, but...all we keep hearing about is how bad those players are offensively. Adding Heyward is suddenly going to change that???

But, but, but...everybody says payroll ISN'T going up a lot. If it is, why not sign Greinke, Wieters, AND Heyward? .

Olivera is gonna hit. It's defense that's the concern with him.

Markakis is a solid hitter

Peterson isn't much of a hitter, neither is Tron or Bethancourt but they should be very good defensively.

So that leaves only three black holes in the lineup?

Ummmm...OK. Will make note - all geniuses need to ask whether they're right AFTER making definitive statements.

Was responding to this gem...

On a team with a top 5 or so defense and really strong young arms, I take that. Royals did pretty well with that format.

Look at the Cardinals. They were at a meh 96 wRC+ but were the best team in the NL because of defense and pitching.

I don't know why people are so ideological about how to build a winning team. Every season we see proof that there are many different ways to build a winning team. Can be around defense, pitching, power, OBP, etc. Good players are what it takes to win. And good players come in many varieties. Right now there is not a type of good player (except another great defensive shortstop or power hitting first baseman) that would be redundant in terms of helping the Braves on the field.
