Jonah Keri podcast with Coppy

Said we will probably take a high school kid in the first round, like the first 4 picks last season.

I posted that in the draft thread. The context made it sound like he was talking about the first pick. He was talking about teams taking to get a top pick and how that doesn't work in baseball because the players are so far away.

Definitely worth listening to. I never knew how strong his relationship was with Gordon Blakeley. I also thought the HS kid draft comment was interesting, given that he had mentioned previously how we want to go with a college bat.

I'm guessing that means Groome is probably their guy.

I don't think Coppy would be so careless as to tip off the teams drafting ahead of us as to which player we like the most. I know this is not like the NFL draft where there is jockeying to be in position to draft a particular player. But you still don't want to give the competition insight into how you rank the players.

It's not necessarily which player we like most. It might be which player we expect to fall to us. It's entirely possible we have Lewis and Puk ranked 1 and 2 but fully expect both to be gone. A statement like that doesn't actually tell very much about our board.

Enjoyed listening to this. I got a chuckle when Coppy randomly dropped the F-bomb. It's a good format for him. Hard to tell how to interpret the comment about drafting HS players. I think it should be take with a grain of salt given the context of the conversation.

I also found it interesting how hesitant he was to give an on-the-record assessment of how good the 2017 team would be. He seems to have learned something after his comments this past offseason about the 2016 team.

Could be, but it could also be Riley Pint, Blake Rutherford, or Mickey Moniak, who seems to be rising.

I do know this. Kiley McDaniel felt that Rutherford was the best overall potential bat in the draft before he was hired by the Braves. I don't know how much input he has, but I'm betting that Coppy being a big reason McDaniel was hired, McDaniel will have some voice.

Would have loved a deeper dive on some of the minor leaguers..... but Coppy did say that Fried got up to 97 mph in one of his starts. I know his last couple outings haven't been great, but if he's dialing up a mid-90s fastball.............. :)

I agree with copy about winning 80 games...nothing worse in pro sports than being avg. really hard to get better from avg draft position

I don't think Kiley McDaniel is in much of position to have influence even if he retains that opinion of Rutherford (a lot of people have backed off that valuation). I mean he's in New Zealand scouting players one month before the draft. I don't think his one year dated scouting board really means all that much.
