Jonny Gomes Against Righties

Most of us have an idea about this, but I wanted to put the numbers out there.

2012 .715 OPS in 137 PA

2013 .745 OPS in 176 PA

2014 .510 OPS in 117 PA

2015 .499 OPS in 76 PA

Career .713 in over 2000 PA

It is only about 200 PA but the data from the past 2 years hint at a significant decline against righties. Given that we currently have Cunningham and Terdoslavich on the roster, I hope we can avoid having him bat in any additional high leverage situations against righties.

He is on a pace for over 200 plate appearances against righties this year, highlighting Fredi's tendency to use him more liberally against righties than has been the case with his managers in the previous three seasons.

I think at first he may have been trying to ride a hot bat. Now, I don't know what he is doing.

Thanks for your excellent analysis as always.

I think the injury to KJ and the lack of LHed starters vs the Braves is probably why he's faced so many RHed pitchers this year. Fredi can't very well allow him to rot on the bench for 5 days because the Braves haven't faced a LHer and then expect him to start vs Kershaw or Hamels and perform.

However, I would like to see Fredi PH more often for guys like Gomes and CJ in high leverage situations. Cunningham and KJ would be much better options vs a RHed reliever late in a game that CJ or Gomes started.
