Jorge Soler to the Angels

If we aren't looking to spend big on SP, I would love to have Morton back for 10 million. 15 million is a bit much for what his is at this stage of his career. But 10 million would be good value. Not gonna get anyone else like him for 10 million for 1 season.

I'd prefer to go younger at SP, but for 10-15M, you cant do much worse than Uncle Charlie. A top 5 of Sale, Strider, Schwelly, Lopez, and Morton works out just fine. Would leave plenty of money to get a SS and LF'er.

This is about where I’m at.

The return is odd. Canning’s expected to make $5.1M and isn’t any better of an option than our current cheaper #5 options.

No way he hits that arb number. Either he signs ahead of arb for around what he agreed to last season (~$2.6m), or they non-tender him and entirely free up the cash.

I’m betting this is the best deal, dollar-wise, Anthopoulos thought he could find.

Canning seems like a good candidate to be the next Holmes. If he accepts for around 2.5 million, he's probably worth a gamble tendering a contract too.

I don't quite understand why the Angels assigned surplus value to Soler.

Don’t complain;-). The Braves got out of the whole contract and got something in return. Take it and run all the way to the bank

Glad someone valued Soler more highly than we did.

Because they are delusional and think they can compete next year and they have little in the way of prospects to trade and dont want to commit to any more big FA contracts. Atleast if Soler blows up in their face its only a 2 year albatross. They can probably flip him at the trade deadline anyways. Maybe right back to us.
