Jorge Soler to the Angels

Canning I think is SP depth that I think they view like Lopez from last year in that he can start if we need it or be a reliever. Not saying he will repeat Lopez's performance but I bet thats the reason they wanted him. The Angels didnt have many better options so its not like they just wanted to unload him. I feel like this is a typical AA move where it prevents us from being desperate later in the offseason. If the offense returns to top 5 in the game we can win a lot of games even with Canning starting as the #5. This move makes me feel its more likely we see a big Aquisition this offseason. If not a big FA and a big trade.

Clearing that entire Soler contract was huge, especially since it was not a given they'd be able to unload him without eating some of the contract or attaching something of value to him. Props to AA for getting out of that one.

Most thought AA would have to eat money or add a prospect to Soler so it’s nice to see he had to do neither.

I figured they could find a partner for him. He isn't a horrible player, just a horrible fielder.

That said, I am trying to figure the logic on this one. Canning isn't some catch, so why even request him in the trade. I assume the Angels said they were going to tender him a contract for 25 and the Braves liked something they saw enough to get him over to Atlanta to kick the tires. If the Angels were going to cut him, then why not wait for that and just scoop him up on a MiLB deal.. If the Braves just non-tender him immediately, then why not just ask for a lottery ticket prospect and move on.

Canning projected for 1.4 war next year.

I figure we tinker with his pitch mix and get a bump more outta him than LAA did.

Unloading Soler's salary is the big part. Canning has been up, down, and injured during his career and Braves have done a pretty good job of identifying guys who have been underperforming or inconsistent so it wouldn't be that big of a surprise if he hung around. Not a hard thrower, but he has pretty good K numbers. Non-tender--as mentioned by several--is always an option.

Canning can spin the breaking ball decently, but doesn't spin the fastball very well. Despite the not-great spin rate he gets average rise, telling me he must throw mostly over the top. This is likely why his sinker doesn't sink...over the top doesn't typically lend itself to a useful sinker.

Maybe they can teach him a cutter and turn him into a 5th SP. Other than that he seems pretty much equal to the AAAA fodder folks around here insist are part of the answer to the rotation. Doesn't seem like the place to spend $5M.

The Braves luxury number currently sits at $213M.

Assuming they non-tender Canning, Laureano and Biggio that drops the number to $198M.

Assuming they pick up the options for Ozuna, TDA, and Bummer that bumps the number up to about $228M.

Assuming the opening day luxury number will be about $275M, that leaves $47M+ to spend.

The funds are there to add pretty much anything AA wants, even Soto at something crazy like 15/600. At that point it doesn't matter who plays SS.

Solid trade. Getting rid of Soler's contract is well worth it, if we think we have a viable #5 tha'ts fine too.

Soler was not the right guy for us. He's a solid player but we have a DH, and he's horrible in the field.

If Soto leaves the Yankees, it will be an all time terrible trade by them. To push out a bunch of chips to not win it all then let Soto walk while being the Yankees. Woof.

My pipe dream is some creativity to get us SNell and Adames. But I don't see that happening.

Agree. There are sections on his Baseball Savant page that are so ugly they made me go cross-eyed, but Braves have done a good job of finding guys and helping them up their game. Maybe the hit the mark with Canning like they have done with Holmes, Lee, and Chavez.

Theoretically, we should still make a run at Fried. Depending on his cost, that might be the best move we could make. And that would be one absolutely filthy rotation.

Bowman wrote today that Morton may be leaning towards returning now and could get a $10-15 million contract. I would assume that decision would take us out of the SP market elsewhere and give us plenty of money to add offense.

The success of a trade has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not a player is signed to a market rate FA contract afterwards.

I hope he retires.
