July International Signees

Notice that Pache is No. 10 on MLB.com list, No. 21 on BBA list. Nice signing either way.

With today's signings, the #Braves will attempt to make some trades to add approximately $1M to their int'l bonus pool to avoid penalties

Incredible inefficiency. Fox probably gets 2 million in the draft; he gets 6.5 million in international free agency.

So with Pache and Cruz, what's the next step for them? Is the DSL next year the earliest we'll hear from them again or will they even be ready for that? I'm always confused about how this works.

Most of the time advanced players like them start stateside.

None of those teams can offer more than $300,000 to any player next year regardless of how large their pool is. Its why we decided to blitz the market in 2016 rather than this year.

The Dbacks also went past their cap last year. Either way, over 1/3 of the teams not being in the running for top signings next year makes for good odds, particularly with the big spenders out of the way.

Yup left them off...thanks.

The Phils just got the number 1 International slot from the DBacks....wonder if that affects us and if they will have more money in the pool for talent than we do?

Depends on how much that is worth. I think the Phils would need to get back around 1 mil total (maybe a smidge more) to not be 10% over their pool from this year.

ETA: The #1 slot is well over 1 mil (they gained 2.35 mil from the trade total), so yeah, looks the Phils will be able to spend in the international signing for 2016. How much money anyone has in the pool next year really doesn't matter all that much though, we will likely be blowing past our spending pool next year (the Phils will just be more competition for players).

I guess the biggest thing is that we should be significantly higher than the competitiion and to me, I don't care if we blow it all on Matian, but the rumor is that we are in the mix for most of the top 10 International free agents for 2016.

We can spend as much as we want next year, there is no upper cap, just depends what upper limit the ownership and management allows. SO we could blow our pool on Matian and still go after a good portion of the top 10. We'd just lose the ability to spend sign in 2017 and 2018, but with a new CBA coming up this year there is a good chance we'll have an international draft added, so that won't matter anyway.

As long as we plan on blowing the doors off the spending cap in 2016...

Outfield Prospect Jorge Ona Leaves Cuba

By Mark Polishuk [July 5, 2015 at 7:19pm CDT]

Jorge Ona, a 19-year-old outfielder from Cuba, has left the island to chase an MLB contract, Baseball America’s Ben Badler reports. Despite not much playing time in Cuba’s Serie Nacional, Ona still ranked sixth on Baseball America’s list of the top 20 prospects still in Cuba (as of April) due to strong performances for the Cuba junior national leagues and in international tournaments.

Ona is a 6’2″, 192-pound right-handed hitter with “a quick, compact swing from the right side, plus raw power and a strong arm in right field.” In a longer scouting report within that top-20 prospects piece (open to BA subscribers), Badler noted that Ona showed good athleticism in as a fielder and “showed a good approach [at the plate] for his age,” though “gauging plate discipline and pitch recognition can be difficult in a brief look.” Badler projected Ona would be a first-round draft pick if he were eligible for the North American draft.

Ona’s lack of Serie Nacional experience and his age will make him subject to international draft pools, and since he was born after Sept. 1, 1995, he would have had to have registered by last May 15 to be eligible for the current international prospect class. Ona therefore won’t be eligible to be signed until July 2, 2016, and since he’ll surely command more than a $300K bonus, that will eliminate a number of teams from his market. The Angels, Blue Jays, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Giants, Rays, Red Sox and Yankees are all prohibited from spending more than $300K on any one player in the 2016-17 international signing period due to exceeding their spending pools in either of the last two signing periods.

Sign them all.

Get as much talent in the pipeline as possible.
