June Rule IV pre-draft Thread

Found this from Scout's MLB Draft guy. No idea how accurate he is, but it's interesting. (Here's the link: http://www.scout.com/mlb/scouting/story/1552956-final-2015-mlb-mock-draft-picks-1-105?s=243)

54. Atlanta Braves – Tanner Rainey 1B/RHP West Alabama
Another well-known rumor is that this is a promised selection. Rainey is a two-way guy who has had a ton of helium thanks to his velocity. He needs a lot work on his secondary stuff and he turns 23 this year.

I think Rainey makes a lot of sense on paper. He's a senior, so we could save some money taking him and using it on our other picks. With all the talk of "risky" picks, that money is very useful. Here's a Baseball America article on some D-2 players making some big jumps, and there's a decent amount of Rainey info at the beginning of it: http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/rainey-allen-climbing-draft-boards-division-ii-ranks/

From that article: "If a team does pick Rainey that high, they will likely try him as a starter, though he has been used exclusively as a reliever in college. But with two above-average offerings and a strong, athletic frame (he is listed at 6-foot-3, 235), he has some characteristics of a starting pitcher. To successfully move to the rotation, scouts say Rainey would have to improve his changeup and prove he can adjust to the increased workload of a starter. His athleticism and work ethic give him a chance to make such a move."

Jeez. I hope not. No offense to Rainey or anything, but does anyone know anything about this guy?

Yeah, I don't know a ton about him, but I do think if they want to spend big on a few of these picks that it wouldn't be a bad idea to draft a senior who you could get significantly under slot and use the rest of the money on your other picks. There are rumors of Daz Cameron falling out of the first round because of his asking price. Maybe you take a senior with the fourth or fifth pick tonight and take Cameron at 28, then give him a lot of money to sign.

As much as Rainey isn't someone that has been talked about a lot, I do think he can make sense for us to get other quality pieces. And if he's mid-90s with a plus slider like Baseball America said, worst case he sounds like a decent relief prospect.

That angle makes sense, but I just hate to see them take another college reliever and try to convert them into a starter.

Callis also mentions that if Texas doesn't take Daz Cameron at #4 that "he could slide further down, perhaps out of the top 36 picks".

Randolph at #14, a HS arm at #28, and Daz at #41???

Yes, please.

How good would the Kimbrel deal look then? Maybin, Wisler, AND Daz??? WOW!!!

Kiley McDaniel's final mock at Fangraphs:

14. Braves – Cornelius Randolph, 3B, Griffin HS (GA)

Randolph has caused a number of rumors due to his bonus demands, with most assuming he goes 10th, 14th, 21st or 28th. The Braves want to get him with their second pick, but I think they’ll take him here since the Royals will selected him at 21 if Atlanta passes.

28. Braves – Ke’Bryan Hayes, 3B, Concordia Lutheran HS (TX)

I’m told this is as far as Hayes will fall with some teams looking at him above this, but would make for an interesting development situation if the Braves took Randolph as well.

McDaniel also has Daz falling to 37 to the Astros, so we'd have to take him at 14 or 28 to get him. Sounds like he's asking massive money though, so we'll see.

As he mentioned, Randolph and Hayes would be interesting to see how they play it with Hayes as a 3B and Randolph mostly seen as a 3B. I was listening to the Baseball America draft podcast today, and they were saying Randolph could play 2B, 3B or even LF. They said no one knows where he'll play right now, but that's mostly said about guys who end up as 1B-only types of prospects, but that isn't the case with Randolph at all. I like Randolph's swing a lot more than Hayes based on the videos I've seen.

Cameron wanting a 5 million bonus is why he would slide so if we were going to pay that it would likely be with the 14th pick. Unless it's a ploy to fall to the Braves like a Francoeur did.

I hope they go with bats early. Next 2 years are supposed to be very good pitching classes. Lets get at least 1 strong class of hitting prospects before we go all pitching again. Would love Randolph and Hayes.

Ke'Bryan Hayes is supposedly a very advanced hitter for his age. He'd be a nice pick-up. Good bloodlines. Son of former major league 3B Charlie Hayes.

It looks like they have to take Randolph at 14 if they want him. Considering Randolph just said he would sign for $2.4M while the slot value for 14 id about $2.8M it makes some sense. Then the best HS arm available at 28 would be a good pick.

Cameron claiming he wants $5M is probably a ploy. He would have to go in the top 5 to have that even be a realistic option since it would be very hard for a t4eam to free up over $1M-$2M to give him so much over slot money. Personally, I hope the Braves stay away from Daz.

I am okay with the Braves tackling one player with signability issues; the new rules allow them to draft in the same slot again next year. Not nearly the risk there used to be over these punks playing hardball because Boras told them to.

I personally would be OK with going Randolph at #14 and scooping Cameron up at #28 if he were still there. There will still be plenty of high school and injured arms available at #41 - Chalmers, Nix, or Justin Hooper could conceivably fall that far, Triston McKenzie, Nick Neidert, and Tristan Beck should all be there as well. One or two of those arms may well be there when they pick again at #54.

While I'm not sure they'd go that way, it'd certainly fit Bridges' quote about looking for "high-upside, championship-caliber players that can impact our system immediately".

http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/...stant-impact-players-in-2015-mlb-draft-060415

Adding those two would make it easier to package one or two of Peterson/Peraza and Maybin/Smith in a blockbuster type of deal if one dropped into their laps.

After reading a bit more, I would be ok with Randolph at 14. It seems like he has a pretty high chance of making it to the majors with his plate approach, and his bat speed gives him great potential as well.

I would then go all-in after Cameron at 28. If you're able to get him, you can then plan accordingly with the rest of your draft to give yourself enough money to pull it off. If he doesn't fall that far, or if you have concerns about being able to sign him, then just go with the best player left otherwise, whether that's a pitcher or a hitter.

Dazzzzmon.

I'm not remotely high on Randolph, but everything else is swell if the Braves are able to nab Cameron with any pick after their 14th. ESPECIALLY at 41. Signability be damned.

The thing I like about what I've read on Randolph is that his approach at the plate is apparently ultra-advanced. He also has great bat speed and good strike-zone awareness, so his offensive profile is a bit like Davidson's, though Randolph's is probably a little better overall. He also will probably be above-average defensively at 3B.
