Just how good is Heyward (the baseball player)?

Man, just because he didn't accept a potential hometown discount does not necessarily mean he doesn't want to be here. Not everyone accepts those deals like McCann did. It was a bit of a different circumstance anyway. There are not many indications that he doesn't want to be here.

As I said in my post, it was either or, or both. It could be that he likes it here but simply feels he can make more year to year which was point #1.

Wren better get some extensions done or we are going to have some really bad/interesting offseasons soon. After the 2015 season Justin/Heyward/Medlen/Uggla will all be free agents. After that offseason its Freeman/Kimbrel/Walden that are free agents.

Until we get a new owner with very deep pockets AND a new TV deal we wont be seeing any extensions with todays dollars. You think Chipper and Andruw Jones didnt hurt the team's spending after Turner decided to buy Nebraska? And Im talking about dollars not worth of those 2.

Does anyone know what he was actually offered last off-season

No, it's all message board hoopla because he and Freddie didn't sign an extension, which no one knows the dollar amount or the terms.

As far as how good is Heyward? Quite simply he's the best player on this team. He had the 3rd highest WAR on the team and of the 6 good Braves, only Mac was within 100 PA of him. If he played all year, it would have been tight between he and Freddie for player of the year.

Offensively last year he was our 5th best hitter but while sporting a seemingly low BABIP.

To throw this comparison I'll use K% and LD% to describe 3 hitters

PLayer A K% 19.2 LD% 26.2

PLayer B K%16.6 LD% 21.4

Player C K%% 19.0 LD% 23.0

2 of those hit around .320 the other is heyward who hit about .260. If Heyward adds his power back from 2012 keeps his K rate down, his BB rate up, and gets hits to fall, He'll be rocking.

Good player now who could be on his way to great. As others have said, he has all the tools. His swing gets funky at times, which could consistently take a chunk out of his batting average, but as long as his walk rate stays healthy, that shouldn't greatly diminish his value and overall performance. Curious to see how he continues to develop.

I have said it before, Heyward needs to drop CJ Stewart as his swing coach. He has the ability, but his swing does not lead to consistency.
