Justice Scalia dead

I don't go to funerals of people i don't like either

but he should have sucked it up and gone to play the political game

but i also think with all the bull**** and disrespect given to him in the last 7 years from the other side he is in full blown "**** them" mode

and i can't really blame him

He's the President of the United States. This is the funeral of one of the most significant jurists in our lifetime - no matter our preferences. It's a bush-league move. He's better than this. Skipping is something Trump would do.

The only justification is if the family told him they didn't want him there.

ok

i haven't heard why he is skipping and his justification for it

TheDon seems to have informed me that he is going to pay his respects in private (which is how i would do it as well but that is really just cause i really really don't like funerals)

Why Justice Scalia was staying for free at a Texas resort

Justice Antonin Scalia’s sudden death over the weekend at a West Texas ranch raised questions about the nature of his travel, who paid for the trip and whether justices are subject to the same disclosure guidelines as other judges or federal officials.

Where did Justice Scalia die?

Scalia was at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort tucked away in the Big Bend region of Texas about 30 miles from the border with Mexico.

The ranch is 30,000-acre getaway that is home to John B. Poindexter, according to the website of J.B. Poindexter & Co. It is a remote location that has reportedly attracted the likes of Mick Jagger, Jerry Hall and Bruce Willis. When Tommy Lee Jones directed a movie more than a decade ago, he filmed several scenes at the ranch, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Who paid for his trip?

All of which raises the question: Who pays for a Supreme Court justice to make this kind of trip?

Not Scalia, it turns out. Poindexter told The Washington Post that Scalia was not charged for his stay, something he described as a policy for all guests at the ranch.

“I did not pay for the Justice’s trip to Cibolo Creek Ranch,” Poindexter wrote in a brief email Tuesday. “He was an invited guest, along with a friend, just like 35 others.”

Poindexter added: “The Justice was treated no differently by me, as no one was charged for activities, room and board, beverages, etc. That is a 22-year policy.’’

However, Poindexter said he did not pay for Scalia’s charter flight to Texas.

A person familiar with the ranch’s operations said Poindexter hosts such events two or three times a year.

Poindexter, who would not identify Scalia’s friend, is a Texas native and decorated Vietnam veteran who owns Houston-based J.B. Poindexter & Co., a manufacturing firm.

The company has seven subsidiaries, with combined annual revenue of nearly $1 billion, according to information on its website. Among the items it manufacturers are delivery vans for UPS and FedEx and machine components for limousines and hearses. The company has 5,000 employees, the site said.

One of Poindexter’s companies was involved in a case that made it to the high court. Last year, the Supreme Court declined to hear a case involving an age discrimination lawsuit filed against one of these companies, court records show.

The nature of Poindexter’s relationship with Scalia remained unclear Tuesday, one of several lingering questions about his visit. It was not known whether Scalia had paid for his own ticket to fly to the ranch or if someone else picked up the tab, just as it was not immediately clear if Scalia had visited before.

It is also still not known who else was at the Texas ranch for the weekend, and unless that is revealed, there could be concerns about who could have tried to raise an issue around Scalia, said Stephen Gillers, who teaches legal and judicial ethics at the New York University School of Law. He compared it to unease that arises when judges and officials from major companies are invited to seminars or educational events that bring them together for periods of time.

“People worry at those kinds of things; there’s a creation of access on the part of people with an interest in the courts, and that is unfair,” Gillers said Tuesday.

Scalia's Hunting Trip Was a Gift From a "Friend" Who Had Business Before the Supreme Court Last Year

Justice Antonin Scalia was taking a free vacation at the exclusive Cibolo Creek Ranch in West Texas when he was found dead inside a guest room Saturday. The trip, the Washington Post reports, was a gift from the ranch’s owner, who just last year obtained a favorable result from the Supreme Court.

The 30,000-acre hunting ranch, located around 30 miles from the Mexican border in the West Texas town of Shafter, is also the home of owner John B. Poindexter, who owns the Houston-based manufacturing firm J.B. Poindexter & Co.

The two men already had a tenuous connection outside of the ranch. Last year, an age discrimination suit filed against the Mic Group, a subsidiary of J.B. Poindexter & Co., reached the Supreme Court, which declined to hear the case.

In an email to the Post, Poindexter said Scalia, who was invited to the ranch as a personal guest, was not charged for his stay. A person “familiar with the ranch’s operations” tells the paper Poindexter typically hosts these free events two to three times a year.

Poindexter explicitly denied paying for Scalia’s charter flight to the ranch and declined to identify the friend who accompanied Scalia or any of the other guests on the trip.

Thank God the hooker got out without being noticed.

That's silly. He's going to pay his respects at a different time and Scalia's family has already agreed that that was probably best.

If he went people would say he was trying to steal the moment for himself. He'll be criticized whatever he does.

He is the President of the United States. This is the funeral of a SCOTUS justice. It's what a leader does. It is expected. If there's ever a question of whether you should go to a funeral, you go. Everything else is just spin and excuse. The only reasons you don't is if you are deathly sick or the family has requested that you not be there. I defend this president on many things. I particular like his "human touch." He's very good at it when he wants to be. This is one of those times when even if he doesn't want to be, it is good to be a statesman.

Kinda like when Scalia,Alito and Thomas boycotted State of the Unions. That was "s" as in multiple ...
Guessing here Obama hasn't anymore ****s to give over what some one that accuses him of infanticide thinks he should or shouldn't do about a funeral

Not really.

I understand there is a video !!

................

an ugly cheap shot would be a doctored video of Scalia discussing how he was going to get a Lamborghini out of this hunting trip.
Rumor has it ...

From a reliable site or that crooked **** you and Goldie like to pull "facts" from?

Not surprised you didn't add something about making the kills less crunchy.

Two wrongs never make a right.

It's a funeral of a SCOTUS. He is the President of the United States. It's what statesmen do. He's a better man than this. Stop making excuses for him.

In spite of the criticism, people close to the Scalia family said Obama was making the right choice. "I wouldn't have expected President Obama to attend the funeral Mass, and I see no reason to fault him for not attending," said Ed Whelan, a former Scalia clerk who now heads the Ethics and Public Policy Center. "The ceremony at the Supreme Court seems the most apt opportunity for the president to pay his respects, but he obviously might have severe competing demands on his time."

....

In spite of the above, who cares whether he goes Friday or to the Mass Saturday. Like someone said above he goes he gets accused of makng it all about him. He doesn't .. like I said, he's outta ****s to give

But hey B, never let an opportunity to scold go to waste

So he's going to to go visit Scalia privately with Michelle on Friday.

That's still not good enough for you folks Beds?

Imagine POTUS going, and the media cutting to his reaction from every eulogy given to Scalia. I think POTUS gave more respect to the family, then credit you're giving to him.
