Keeping Tabs on the Various 3B Options

This past off season we discussed quite a few 3B options for the Braves. After ~50 PAs, here is how all the interesting names (plus Flaherty) are faring:

Flaherty: .366/.458/.463, 0.5 WAR, .484 BABIP!
Camargo: Has not played
Riley (AA): .294/.351/.559, .381 BABIP
Moustakas: .327/.352/.596, 0.6 WAR, .350 BABIP
Frazier: .295/.450/.523, 0.9 WAR, .333 BABIP
Nunez: .271/.314/.500, 0.3 WAR, .268 BABIP
Headley: .038/.194/.038, -0.3 WAR, .077 BABIP

All the potential options except Nunez and Headley are due for regression, some quite a bit more than others. Flaherty is obviously the luckiest man on the planet currently, while Mous and Frazier are also hitting into some good luck early. Nunez is producing as expected, while Headley has had a horrid 30 PAs to open 2018. Riley is still riding the BABIP train to a ~.900 OPS, just like last year despite striking out 29.7% of the time. I would look for his numbers to regress closer to his A+ numbers (.718 OPS) when his BABIP regresses closer to the .289 number he posted at that level.

It will be interesting to see if the Braves ultimately made the right decision at 3B as the year(s) march on. Of course, they likely couldn't afford anything other than what they have anyways, so the unexpected Flaherty explosion was most fortuitous.

I’ll give you this one chance to buy your way out of our bet for $20. That saves you $5, which goes a long way at your local dollar general. Think of all the camo items you can buy with the savings!!

Nah, camargo will be up soon, and Mous will be booting balls soon

AA has another line of thought. He likes the youngsters he signed in Toronto to many years ago.

Braves have just signed Jose Bautista to MiLB deal to play 3rd.
