Keith Law's Midseason Top 50 Update

to supplement

Albies (^^^)

Yep, I agree, but I was doing minor leagues only, I'd also add Acuna stock down, and concerning given the strikeout rate, I don't mind some strikeouts, but if you're going to K 30% of the time, you need big power. I was figuring 25-28% of the time, but it's higher and lately it's been near 40%.

Acuna's swing and miss rate isn't bad, the strikeout rate will come down. He's struck out looking a lot.

What does he say about Pache?

Quoting:

"He is basically Andruw Jones with the glove. Dave Roberts arm. He has a little work to do with the hit tool, but right now I'd put it somewhere between Tony Gwynn and Ichiro. He may not hit for Bonds like power, but expecting something along the lines of Vladimir Guerrero power seems reasonable at this point in time, but remember, he is still growing. I'd like to see him and Billy Hamilton in a race, just to see if he beats Hamilton by like 30 feet, or finishes before Hamilton even gets started. He is so fast, he actually bent time and space and went back to 1900 to meet the original Billy Hamilton only to tell him that there is another Billy Hamilton who is way faster than him, and that Pache (he refers to himself in the 3rd person) is even faster than the new Billy Hamilton."

Dang that is a pretty solid scouting report.

Well played!!!

My Opinion:

Guys on the trade now or soon list (move now to try to maximize value - if any):

1. Allard - unlikely his stuff plays at the ML level above a back end guy. Sure, it can happen, but the odds are heavily against it.
2. The AAAA brigade - Sims, Wisler, Parsons, Hursh, Carlos Franco, Peterson, Rio Ruiz, Braxton Davidson. Guys with limited, in some cases almost zero, value but who are fine throw-in guys.
3. Jeremy Walker - see Allard
4. Tucker Davison - see Allard
5. Demeritte - position change to OF diminishes value even IF he cuts the K's and starts to hit.
6. Enderson Franco - see Allard

Almost on the trade list (willing to wait and see but would move if necessary):

1. Wentz - see Allard; needs to start missing more bats in the minors to create belief that he can survive in the majors
2. Muller - see Wentz
3. Cumberland - limited positionally and will have to improve average while keeping BB rate high to stay off the above list.
4. Alex Jackson - See Cumberland
5. Isranel Wilson - slow developing
6. McCreery - getting too old; needs to happen soon.
7. Derian Cruz - still young but hasn't show anything significant
8. Ricardo Sanchez - almost included him on the trade now list
9. Lucas Herbert - was against the pick when they took him and don't see any reason so far to rethink that

My Top 20 (arbitrary to some but assembled by my own criteria of actual results mixed with projection of talent; none on the above lists are on the below even though some would be worthy of inclusion based on performance to date - Allard is probably in the 8, 9, 10 area for me as well as Wentz and Muller):

1. Wright
2. Soroka
3. Toussaint
3. Waters
4. Riley
5. Anderson
6. Pache
7. Gohara
8. Fried
9. Wilson
10. Contreras
11. Tarnok
12. Encarnacion
13. Phillips
14. Zimmerman
15. Weigel
16. De La Cruz
17. Ynoa
18. Bacon
19. Jeffrey Ramos
20. Greyson Jenista - not sold on his ability to hit enough to be a ML 1B
21. Odalvi Javier (added if you take Soroka out)

I had hopes for Tucker Davidson after his finish last year but they are fading. Alex Jackson as well.

2018 draft appears to be a bust to me but you never know. Guys like Weigel and Zimmerman have shown potential, maybe there will be a diamond in the coal.
