Kimbrel: Yea or Nay?

we have 39M committed to 2021

9M million of it being ender

who gives a **** about that 3rd year? let's get better and take a shot before Freeman is done.

3 years is the key thing for me. I dont really want us to burden the team with big long term contracts so we can afford to re-sign our good young players. This would align Kimbrel coming off the books with Freeman/Swanson/Folty hitting free agency and many of our young players getting expensive in arbitration years. Signing Kimbrel might even save some money in arbitration for other relievers since saves still factor into their arbitration salaries. Kimbrel taking 90+% of saves will suppress their salaries. We desperately need a bridge in the closer position until we develop a better pen. I still think we could have signed him and traded him after 2020.

Still rather have Craig.

I understand. But I also think it is a mistake to say we just have to have so and so. At the end of the day years and price always come into play. Some of the more enthusiastic Kimbrel backers around here declined to get into a discussion of how far they were willing to go in terms of years and AAV. I mean a discussion ahead of the signing. Which is different than saying after the fact that they would have been willing to pay what the Cubs did.
