Kyler Murray

50PoundHead

Hessmania Forever
Don't see anything about his decision today to return much (if not all) of his bonus to the A's and will pursue the NFL. Are there any draft implications because if Murray returned his bonus, one could argue he never really signed. I hope they stiff the A's. Whoever thought that pick was a good idea should be fired.

A's won't be getting a compensation pick, which means they won't be getting the 11th pick in the draft this year like they would have if he had not signed.

Picking him wasn't a bad decision. Letting him play college football was the bad decision.

Yeah pretty risky pick. Not sure he was good enough ball player to gamble that high of a pick on. Maybe second rounder. But I would probably have waited to the third.

The bigger picture is MLB lost an elite athlete to the NFL because he will make more cash signing a football contract than a baseball contract.

Not a good outcome for the future of the sport, and shows why elite athletes choose other sports over baseball.

I think he chose football bc he liked it better. He could've signed out of HS, but wanted to play football.

Very true. That said, sending back almost $4 MM for a roll of the die takes a pretty healthy pair.

He knows what he is going to make. He will get picked in the first round. He signed the baseball contract as insurance for an injury his final season.

I also thought the same thing chef said above. I bet this will he exhibit K or whatever in the next CBA talks. It takes young stars way to long to make money. The trek through the minors plus 3 even 4 years in the majors before realizing any money. Where other sports pay you right away and you can keep making money if you preform.

Tables have turned. MLB contracts used to be the gold standard in American sports not even like 15 years ago.

Interesting though because rookies don't get the big signing bonuses anymore after the new CBA changed that. I remember when Vince Young got like 50 million guaranteed. Now rookie bonuses are nowhere near that. So yes, Murray can probably make more money in the short-term playing football, but if he was actually an elite MLB player he could make more money and not risk his health like playing football.

NBA contracts are now the gold standard though, especially in AAV.

This in so many ways. Have to figure out a way to pay young US players to bring the best atheltes back to the game.

He is going to get more endorsement deals in the NFL. When he flames out in three or four years he can try the baseball route out.

I guess I don’t quite understand why a team would want to spend a first round pick on a: smaller, worse version of baker mayfield.

The protection the nfl gives to QBs now makes it more understandable, but I don't think kyler should be a top 20 pick. I think he's a project

That's my take as well. He's supremely talented, but he is also very small. Of course, we are seeing a lot more in terms of wide-open offenses in the NFL and there's probably a team that sees him as fitting that paradigm.

First round pick = 5th year option
Second round pick or after = 4 year contract

Same reason Ravens traded back in to the 1st round last year to nab Lamar Jackson. If he hits, you get 1 more year with your starting QB on their rookie contract.

Wonder if they will ever make a push to make the game younger. There is a reason the common fan doesn't care about college baseball, high school baseball, or even the MLB draft. Because you won't see most of those players in the big leagues for many years. In football and the NBA it's obviously much different.

Murray is better at football than at baseball. He was one of the top two or three players in college football this year, regardless of classification. He probably wasn't in the top 50 of college baseball players. Murray was drafted by the A's more for his athleticism and potential than his actual production.

Other than the risk of being a vegetable by the time he's 40 if he takes too many hits as a QB, he made the right call. He's guaranteed to get a chance to be a NFL QB, with the upside of being a star. In baseball he's not a lock to ever make it to MLB, and if he did make it he'd probably have an upside of Dee Gordon or even Ender...not bad, but far from star level.

The problem is that in baseball, the rewards are very much delayed. If you're a top pick in the NFL you're getting a huge contract, instant endorsement deals, and are going to play very quickly. In baseball, you get a nice signing bonus and then have to slog through the minors for years.

The flip side of that, however, is that a baseball career is often much longer than a football career and your life after baseball is usually much better. Baseball doesn't wear on your body the way that football does.

However, when you're dealing with 20 year old kids, these distant future considerations don't carry much weight.

That being said, I'm not worried too much about the future of the game as far as talent goes. Baseball has a vice grip on talent from Latin America and the ability to sign 16 year olds and develop them is something that you don't have in a lot of other sports.
