Let’s play the guessing game

Mlb.com writer Anthony Castrovince suggested this deal

Braves get MadBum and Smith
Giants get Bryse Wilson, Kolby Allard, and Justin Smith

I’d do that deal

Do people still think Brian Sabean is GM?

They have Farhan Zaidi now... someone who was under both Beane in OAK and Friedman in LA for a long time. Giants are going to get value out of their trades just like AA has.

I'm sure the Giants are going to try to package them together for a FV 50 or better centerpiece.

My guess is they don't find any takers, and all buyers will look to add pieces individually for lesser parts.

During trade season there's a lot of talk about things like "package deals" and "extension windows", even though those things never really happen very often...or at least not nearly as often as the narratives surrounding them suggest.

I would not give up Wilson for Bumgarner. I'd much rather give up 2-3 40s for Smith and leave Bumgarner for someone else willing to pay for the name.

Other than Chapman, rentals usually dont cost much more than a 40/45V type of prospect.

Obviously some teams overpay but the market for guys on the last year of their deals or control normally isnt an extreme cost.

Zack Wheeler to the 10 day IL with “shoulder inflammation” either one of two things...

1. The Mets are trying to protect him so they can trade him in 2 weeks

Or.

2. The injury is legit and not a good sign for an oft-injured player

You do have to remember if a player is likely to generate a compensation pick there is some value attached to that. It would apply most likely to Wheeler who I think the Mets would tender if they didn’t re-sign.

Very few players can generate much surplus value in two months though. It’s mostly a contenders premium and lost compensation picks if a contract is expiring.

I agree. Especially since I have Wilson as our 2nd best pitching prospect currently. Most I'd be willing to give up for half a season of MadBum and Smith is a couple 45 FV guys from the group of Allard, Wentz, Ynoa, Weigel, or any other prospect that has moved up into the 45 FV range (I feel pretty confident that Ynoa and Weigel are 45 FV at this point).
