This is the problem with corporate media. I think it’s absolutely reasonable to say Republicans are trying to downplay both the significance and the public interest involved in the Signal controversy. But this right here is bull****, and Enten and CNN absolutely know it. Those surges are not indicative of public interest in the story being any larger than any other story. People have no reason to Google The Atlantic or Signal, even if they are deeply, deeply invested in politics. You cannot use a spike in interest in two niche topics alone as evidence for public interest. It’s deceptive journalism at its finest, and provides cover for Trump and his supporters to criticize the media’s portrayal of the incident as the “real” issue at hand here.
