Liberty revenue up 36 million last year

The Phillies wealth isn't infinite. If they spend $24MM on Burnett that money doesn't magically return once he's departed. The team is flush, no doubt, but with the way they have performed the last couple of years CBP isn't exactly the mint anymore. As I've said several times this offseason, instead of wasting money on washed up mediocrity (Chooch Ruiz/Byrd) and old pitchers (Burnett) why not invest it your player development system or international operations? Or just save it for a rainy day? (Or just sign good players).

You are right: Burnett does not 'hurt' Philly, but his contract is an unequivocal waste of resources as are virtually all of Amaro's moves.

Save it for a rainy day? I'm fairly certain if teams have a set payroll budget but spend X amount of dollars under that they get it keep it for future seasons. If you have money to spend on that season then spend it. And you are right the Phillies are on a down turn. All the more reason to get as many wins as possible with a new television contract coming up after this season. The Phillies will spend the same on player development and international operations whether a deal like this was made or not. Just like almost every other team. The Phillies may not have infinite money but they have a lot and will get a lot more after this year.

BINGO! Does Ruben Amaro not realize that is how the Phillies became so good in the first place? Homegrown players like Jimmy Rollins, Pat Burrell, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, ect.?

Didn't the Phillies just get down renewing their TV deal? I thought I remember that being news not all that long ago after the Dodgers did their tv deal?

I dont see why Hawk keeps bringing up the Burnett deal.

Philly has plenty of money, and for 1 year, its not too bad.

Because they aren't going to win in 2014.

With the money they will pay Burnett ($30MM over two years, or $23.5 if Philadelphia declines their 2015 mutual option and Burnett accepts his end) they could've gone after a Matt Garza or Ubaldo Jimenez. Best case scenario they pay Burnett $16MM for one year of mediocrity. Not exactly a great value.

I don't know that I'd say that. They once again have (potentially) one of the best top 3's in baseball with Lee, Hamels, and Burnett. Solid BP with a great closer. Offense/health will be their deciding factor. I don't expect them to be much better than .500, but they have some talent. This isn't the Marlins or Cubs we're talking about here.

Why are we talking about the Phillies in this thread? Very strange to me.

We should just all be excited that the Braves are a profitable business now. That might indicate that Liberty is willing to invest more to achieve a larger marketshare.

Papelbon isn't really great any more. He's on the downswing.
They need everyone in their lineup and rotation to remain healthy to even have a small shot.

Looking back at it your right. They just got done doing this in January. 2.5 Billion deal for 25 years. Comes out to like 100 million a year. Up from the 30 or so they were getting. So they have money and it's not that big of a deal what they pay AJ.

I dont see why Hawk keeps bringing up the Burnett deal.

Because I want y'all to remember my obsession with its ****tiness when Burnett sucks it up this season and Philadelphia languishes in mediocrity the next half-decade.

What's your meaning of suck it up?

An ERA in the mid 3's with 200+ IP's?

Phillies have a great bullpen? Since when? For years the Phillies biggest issue has been their bullpen. That's why Charlie Manuel always rode his starters into the ground which may have led to the early demise of Roy Halladay. Papelbon is still one of the 10 best closers in the majors but he has slipped a lot the last year or two from his peak years in Boston. The Phillies have one of the oldest everyday lineups in the majors. When's the last time Chase Utley and Ryan Howard made it through a full season? Rollins has been on a severe nosedive since the start of 2009 and last year was worth -9.1 runs offensively. They're big off season free agent signing to booster the offense was Marlon Byrd. That really screams improvement. Of course all of this is on paper but the Phillies look like an 75-80 win team to me.

He's pitched 200+ one of the last four years.
He's 37 and didn't really have a desire to pitch this year until he was offered a boatload of money.
He could just as easily be a 4.5 era pitcher as he could be mid-3s.

He could, but i wouldnt bet on it to happen.

To be fair, he said solid BP, not great.
However, their BP is not even solid, and it's been bad for years now. Papelbon is winding down and recently said he can't pitch as well when he's on a losing team.
Rollins is bad, Howard can't touch lefties, Utley will miss time, Dom Brown isn't that good, Marlon Byrd.
They are about a 75 win team.

I didn't say the Phillies had a great pen. I said they had a solid pen and a great closer. Which is true. Adams, Bastardo, Diekman, Lincoln, and De Fratus is solid group. Not amazing by any stretch, but solid. And despite his age Paps continues to produce and be one of the most reliable closers in baseball.

Again, I don't expect them to be much better than .500, they obviously have some talent and enough talent to make some noise if they catch some breaks.
