Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

So assuming opening day payroll will be near 140 million. I would offer Brad Miller/Jonathan Villar 1 year around 6/7 million and sign whoever agrees to it first, but I prefer Villar given that he's regarded as a better defender. ThenI would do the same to Melanon/Greene and offer 1 year at 4 million.

Miller/Villar gives you a supersub capable of filling in at multiple positions. Also allows you to cut bait with Camargo before during ST to save some money for the deadline.

That's a lot of money for either one of them, IMO. Not sure who else they would get that from.

Somewhat similar to how I'm not sure who is going to pay Melancon 5m.

Melancon + Miller to finish up might be a pretty good way to wrap it up though. I'm pretty comfortable with Melancon on the backend and he did let the Braves really extend that pen last season.

I've guessed round numbers for Swanson and Soroka. It looks like the Braves are sitting around $127M with a couple holes on the Bench and possibly DH. Good news is there are many players still available that would make excellent complementary pieces for a contender. I agree with South that some Miller/Duvall/MM icing would go well on this cake.

I guess we don't 100% need it, but I'd love to add two great bullpen arms. They are out there to be had at bargain prices.

Y'all figure Melancon somewhere between the 3.5m given to Soria and the 5.5 give to Yates? That seems like the right neighborhood.

One of the things I left out about the AA interview yesterday...

He did say payroll would be lower than last year's original projected payroll FWIW - just not by how much.

If we use Roster Resource's numbers, 2020 would have been $158 million. Purely a stab in the dark, but it's probably "fair" to put it at ~ $140 million for 2021 IMO. Using the numbers Enscheff and I have on our sheets (within a million or so of each other) that leaves roughly $12 million to spend.

$5 million for Melancon leaves you ~ $3 million for a LH bat for the OF and ~ $3 million for another utility guy/LH bat behind Riley - or maybe even Greene if AA decides to go that way.

Melancon, one of Mazara/Reddick/Bruce, and one of Asdrubal Cabrera, Brad Miller, or Villar would be a really nice way to close out the winter.

Is Villar any better than Camargo for the price?

Better defensively at SS, and he looked more comfortable in the OF when he spent time out there (although I admittedly only saw him out there a handful of times). Certainly a much better option as a pinch-runner late in games.

Think it would be interesting to see if any of the Villar/Cabrera/Miller group would take a split deal with Opening Day as the day they'd have to be added to the roster or cut loose. That way you wouldn't have to clear a 40-Man spot right away they could really push Camargo during camp. When they beat him out they could just replace him on the roster.

If we have enough money left and the DH looks like it will be implemented, I would see if JBJ wanted to take a 1 year cushion deal. Another client Boras is hanging out to dry. Could be left without a seat in a couple weeks.

. West-coast teams in FL will play 28 games and east-coast teams 24, making up rest with intrasquad-type matchups.

I don't think guys like Comargo and Luke Jackson are guaranteed. Not in this market. Dayton may not be safe.

For 12/13 million we should be able to improve.

I think we need a LH OF that can PH. Someone who isn't horrid in the OF. I think we need another RH pen arm, maybe two. It seems like there are so many guys that you might be able to get that bat and 2 RH pen arms with some pedigree for 15 million. Then you can drop Jackson and Dayton if you need to.

If we just need someone to play SS for a couple of days, then I think you could play Comargo there. He's bad, but so is Villar. If we have to carry a back up SS, you might as well spend the minimum for a glove only b/c the options look bad.

I still think Flowers is coming back for 1 million. Maybe they'll let Alex Jackson catch. I think they'll want Contreras to play more and be ready for late season and the playoffs.

I think Villar is definitely better overall than Camargo. His 2020 was rough, but the 4 years prior to that were solid. 6/7 million is probably a bit much in this market though.

I agree Villar is better, I just don't know how it would play out on the $/production ratio.
