Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

What metrics? The ones from a short season?

When Ender was injured and struggling in 2019 he rebounded once healthy. That rebound lasted for about 8 minutes until he was hurt again, but he rebounded nonetheless.

The Braves are paying him regardless, so they have to see if he gets back to a 2 win guy next year. Maybe he was hurt in 2020. Maybe he is simply done as a MLB player. Unless he looks useless in ST and/or Pache impresses, he will probably get reps while Pache spends some time in AAA.

It’s called resource management, and teams do it all the time early in the season. The best 26 players rarely break camp with the MLB team.

2019 he did not rate well on defense either.

Not sure why we couldn't top this offer, unless AA has other things in mind, or unless Duvall wanted guaranteed starting job.

Duvall will earn $2MM in 2021, while there’s a mutual option for $7MM or a $3MM buyout in 2022, per Mish.

The anticipated arb for Duvall was $4m; the Braves clearly didn’t want him at that number, since they non-tendered him. The Marlins are going to pay him $5m, which appears to be at least $1m more than the Braves were willing to pay. Seems pretty simple to me.

I liked Duvall, and thought he would still be useful in 2021, so I’m disappointed the Braves didn’t want to pay him ~$4m. But he just earned a guaranteed $5m, and he’ll probably play a lot more with Miami, so good for him.

No way to know for sure since AA will probably never say it, but that's probably a sign that without the DH there was only ever going to be room for one of Ozuna or Duvall and that the decision that they were willing to put up with Ozuna's defense had probably been made early on.

Beginning to wonder if everybody's waiting the RPs out (and even potentially everybody else) trying to get unbelievable deals at this point. Pitchers and Catchers report in a week, so it's probably fair to say that guys that don't already have travel arrangements in place are in for one *elluva week. Maybe they're packed and ready to go, but it will still be incredibly hard to get where you need to and settle in comfortably enough to compete for a job if you don't sign by tomorrow.

There are more than a few legitimate 7th-8th inning guys still left - we knew the market was going to be flooded, but I really am going to have a hard time believing that guys like Melancon, Greene, Rosenthal, Jeffress, Petit, Justin Wilson, and Keone Kela are all staring minor league deals in the face.

There should be a flurry of MLB deals in the $1M-$5M range signed in the next week or so. I expect the Braves to be doling out 2-5 of them.

Filling out the relief corps is more important now to get those guys in camp. We can fill out the margins of the roster during ST. We always make some deals even up to the last week of ST.

There are still many FA bats available that can make a difference: https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=ALL&teamid=0#ALL

Several BP arms as well: https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=ALL&teamid=0#RP

Hell, there are even some #3/4 SPs available: https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=ALL&teamid=0#SP

Guys like Gardner (a name I hadn't really considered), JBJ, Puig, Shaw, Gonzalez, Flowers and Miller all fit on this roster. AA needs to scoop a few of them up.

Cespedes\Puig option for 4th OF til Inciarte gets **** canned?

I'd take a flier on either one, but I would think they would be looking for a starting job somewhere. I suppose we could Ozuna, Acuna, Puig/Cespedes in the OF until Pache is ready, but that OF defense would be pretty horrid I think.

Puig was out of baseball. He will want a one year deal but as a starter. He wants to get paid again. He won’t do that unless he starts. I just don’t see that with us unless we keep Pache down.

Beggers and choosers and what not.

I'd take Puig and get into a brawl with the mets.

Joyce to Phillies; Lowrie to A's.

Did Joyce go from a middle of the order bat on a playoff (expanded playoffs in a short season but still) to a minor league deal? Woof. I thought he was in the 4/5 range for a while, but I'm pretty sure he was a starter for the Marlins.

I thought Joyce could be a fit for us.
