Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Meanwhile we continue to do nothing to improve the very weak bench, and the pen could use one more good arm.
If there’s one place AA has shown to be aggressive, it’s at the deadline. He does a great job of building on the team’s weak spots. It’s totally rational to think he will make another move or two before the season and wait until the deadline to strike. It’s been a strong offseason, let the man work.

I want another RH RP. But I think with the guys listed plus Wilson we'd be ok. I still like Weigel. Others like Ynoa.

We have to do better on the bench. Ideally I want two more bench bats if we really have close to 10 million to spend.

Thats exactly what i am thinking people complained about Nick Markakis but want more old players to take development time from the newcomers. Season is long people get hurt and the budget is not the best.

This team was one game away from the World Series a few months ago - "development time" is no longer one of the main concerns.

I'd be ok with Markakis if Snit wasn't deeply in love with him. At least previous year's Markakis. He seemed done last year.

A high OBP, LH, OF for 2 million bucks would be great for this team. We just can't have someone that Snit wants to play everyday b/c of mystical reasons.

Snitker do whatever he want and he dont give playing time to the bench.

So we need more players like Markakis?

I understand you don't speak perfect English, but do you read it? At no point did I say "we need more players like Markakis".

The Braves need to significantly improve their bench - the fact that you say "he don't give no playing time to the bench" simply proves you haven't been watching the games. You realize Acuna missed a month last season, Ozzie missed two months, and d'Arnaud CAN'T catch every game, right? The only way opposing Pitchers keep Acuna from legitimately becoming a 50/50 threat is to keep pitching him inside so he can't extend his arms - he's going to keep getting hit, and he's going to miss time.

If the current bench players are the only options to step in and play if ANYONE misses time, there is a legitimate chance the team could miss the playoffs. There is ZERO chance Acuna, Freeman, Ozuna, Albies, Dansby, and Riley play 150+ games each, and probably a better chance that d'Arnaud isn't behind the plate for 120+ games.

2018-2019 Markakis as a platoon player is fine. He didn't need to be hitting against lefties. 2020 version looked to be done and I suspect he officially retires in ST once nobody gives him a major league deal.

I feel like the bench clearly needs 2 options. Someone that can backup SS and a hitter that can handle RHP. Puig, for his career, has reverse splits and has done really well against RHP. I suspect that after sitting a year out Puig is going to hold out for a starting job someone to rebuild his value. Just not sure he is going to get that since he didn't even have many options last year before covid hit.

First I understand AA need to improve the bench but i don’t see many of those free agents to improve our team. A lot of people talk over here about Jonathan Villar.

Check the stats compared with Johan Camargo.
Jonathan Villar play 52 games and Camargo playing less had almost better stats. Villar had a lot of stole base and a negative war. Probably a worst defender too.

Is he going to be Camargo's replacement? He's played 2B his entire career minus a handful of innings in the OF. But he is a lefty that historically, including last year, has done well against RHP.

Can play 2b, LF/RF, and 1b. Pretty decent LH bench bat that should never hit against LHP if it can be helped. I hope we can bring back Flowers and get at least 1 other bench option (or get a starting 3b and move Riley to the bench).

Hmm, I was hoping for a better LHH caddy for Riley.

This is like signing Markakis if Markakis couldn’t play a position the Braves actually needed to fill.
