Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Well this is amusing: https://www.mlb.com/news/kris-bryant-trade-fits

Braves get Bryant in exchange for Muller, Newk and Riley. The article says the Braves say no, but doesn't really do justice to just how over the top that offer would be.

Then it suggests Bryant to the Dodgers for Taylor and DJ peters...which they also say the Dodgers wouldn't agree to.

So why in the world would they even mention the Braves deal which is roughly 2x as much value of the Dodgers package? Bryant is probably worth one of Riley or Newk...certainly not both plus a lottery ticket arm.

The moronic overvaluation of Kris Bryant continues...

MLB.com is desperate for clicks... when you toss around wild trades with big names its gonna draw the masses to view.

If No DH this year, then would something like Brantley and Turner be about the best case, possibly realistic, scenario? Could maybe bring them in under 25m.

If you had to go more than 1 year on either, you could slot them to DH next season. Probably could play Riley pretty liberally for both.

Are the Reds folding it in after trading Iglesias and putting Gray on the block? Cause Suarez would be pretty effing fantastic for us.

It got me thinking. If there are teams like the Reds, Phillies, etc. that are really hurting from loss of revenue, i'm wondering if AA will actually go for it this offseason.

The Braves are coming off a season where we were 1 game away from the world series. The all star game is held in our ball park for the 2021 season. If Liberty has given the green light, there is no doubt this would be to offseason it makes sense to go for it.

Good question. The Phillies were talking significant budget reduction right after the regular season, but the Reds are late to the dance. Reds have a pretty decent core of guys and the Central should be up for grabs so it's a bit puzzling. Of course, you can't print your own money and Cincinnati isn't a big market. The Phillies were stupid; the Reds merely unfortunate.

Although it is early in the offseason. No team outside of the Braves, Angels, and White Sox have done anything of value to improve their team.

He would be interesting.
Reds have Senzel who is probably better suited to play 3B. Would we give up Waters to replace Senzel in CF? I think you'd have to.

If you could get Senzel and Brantley, we'd look really nasty.

Reds were a playoff team last year, but maybe their FO (wisely?) sees that they're not likely to repeat that success unless they're able to spend a lot money which they clearly aren't able to do. their offense is in absolute shambles, and without Bauer their SP doesn't look great. there's really no reason they shouldn't be willing to deal Suarez. Castillo would be nice, too, but he's so insanely valuable right now.

As always, take it with a grain of salt, but my friend who's friends with many in the industry said the Braves are kicking tires on Marcus Semien, LaStella and Didi Gregorius as possible 3rd base/infield options.

LaStella made sense to me b/c he can hit and can be passable at 3B, LF and maybe DH. Also likely a two year deal w/o a ton of money.

I looked into Semien as a potential 3B option b/c of the lack of RH bats. The problem is, how good of a hitter is he? He had one monster year. He has been speculated to consider a one year deal to prove he's a good hitter, so maybe that makes sense. But it is a risk.

It looks like no DH. So guys like Lastella, Semien, Profar make more sense to me now. Finding that RH bat if it's not Ozuna or Springer gets tough.

Whit Merrifield would be an interesting option too given RH bat and positional versatility. But what is he going to cost? He's good but not great. Value is in the contract for a good player.

What if AA really goes for it? How about DJ Lemahieu, an excellent (and expensive) hitter, to rotate between 2B, 3B, LF, and DH? Potentially Riley could move to LF. He has less power than Ozuna but should age more gracefully.

just can't see AA signing one of the top FAs to a multi-year deal.

Forgive me, I just haven't seen you reference xwOBA much before your most recent posts on Riley. And your position on Riley seems like a complete 180 of your opinion on him from a couple months ago.

I guess I should have been a little more clear. Shaw is definitely a better back-up than our current options. As a pure bench bat, I would most certainly welcome Shaw. But he has been pretty awful the last 2 seasons as anything more than a bench player. He simply isn't someone I want platooning with Riley.

Never thought he meant it would be a strict platoon - I haven't either although it may have come across that way after seeing the confusion here.

I think this is Riley's make-it-or-break-it year. He's going to be given the lion's share of ABs (whether at 3B or in LF) - Shaw (or Mazara) wouldn't be being brought in to split time with him, but as an insurance policy (of sorts) in the event the small sample size of improvements we saw last season withers away. It's all but impossible to find FANS who are willing to give players time to adjust and learn - particularly when their team is a contender. Shaw is the best LH 3B option with pop available right now even if he has slipped a bit (better than Holt and far better than Camargo), but as such he's going to cost more than we'd like - and if non-tendering Duvall as a potential $5+ million platoon/bench bat signals the need to pinch pennies around the margins, Shaw may well be too expensive. I still really like the idea of adding Moran (if the 2 sides somehow worked out a DH) because strict platoons of Riley/Moran and Duvall/Mazara combined with Ozuna as the DH would be an amazingly deep offense to watch IMO. The problem there would still be the same as it's been all offseason - are there really enough resources available for AA to piece something like that together even without spending any more money on a backup SS or on the pen? He'd also have to give up SOME LEVEL of prospect capital to add Moran as well, and the question then becomes "are we close enough to believe that trading any level of prospect for a part-time player is the kind of thing that pushes us over the top?"

Lynn traded. Gallo next?

Carp put Suarez in my head, and now i can't get him out.
he would presumably cost a lot, however. i'd be willing to include Waters. Suarez is cheap and good. he'd be perfect.
guessing it would take Waters and a good bit more.

Suarez has a very reasonable contract. He's owed about $45 million over the next 4 seasons. He will be 30 next year. Was worth about 4 WAR from 2017-2019 and was on pace for slightly below that last year. He will turn 30 next year. He will probably require quite a haul to land him.

My position on Riley has been that he was terrible in 2019, and I pinpointed precise areas he needed to improve. In 2020 he made real improvements in those areas and became a better player. Now he is a young player who should be given a chance to build upon his improvements, unless 3B is the only place AA can add the Ozuna replacement.

My position on Riley from day 1 has been that he's a RHH Jake Lamb, and he isn't the impact hitter his early hot streak fooled many people into believing he was. He is a guess hitter with good power who is showing signs of "figuring things out", and that's a good thing. I would have gladly traded him to any team dumb enough to value him as an impact hitter. That doesn't mean I hate him, or want him dumped like emotional fans posting in a game thread often suggest.

would you do something like Riley, Waters and say Wright for Suarez?

I think you are pretty much spot on. Without the DH I don't see any other way to add the RHH barring an unexpected trade. As far as LF goes, Brantley is the Markakis upgrade we all hope AA can get, but finances may dictate a lower end option like Joc or Rosario.

Assuming no DH, Turner is my top target with Riley logging some PAs in the OF until Pache is ready.

I am the low man around here on Waters, so sure. This isn't the type of trade we've ever seen AA make in Atlanta, so I'm not sure it's anything worth pondering too much.
