Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

I don't see the Braves overpaying in the early part of free agency for guys who are not obvious solutions to big problems.

Alex Wood is a logical person to keep tabs on, but not the kind of guy you make an offer he can't refuse. I see him as a possible upgrade on Josh Tomlin more than a rotation piece. He certainly could be a King Felix type sign as well.

I could be wrong about that, but there should be guys like Wood looking for work late in FA.

Arizona is not a likely place to dump Ender Inciarte. He makes more money than both Escobar and Peralta.

Peralta is a reasonable target to platoon with Duvall. He is pretty clearly in decline and his big year was pretty clearly an outlier, but he probably can be counted on to give you 10-15% better than average production vs RHP and not kill you in LF. He's owed 7.5m in 2021 and 7.5m in 2022. I wasn't really in love with him when he was the flavor of the month and am less so now and I'm crazy about 2 year commitment, but it could be worse. I'd rather give Pederson a little more money though.

Escobar is a switch hitter owed 1/7.5m. his stronger platoon split is actually vs LHP. He's been below average in his career vs RHP. He's coming off a bad season (in which he left LHP pretty well) and he too looks like someone whose 2018 was an outlier.

I wouldn't imagine either player would require a mint of prospects, but getting both and dumping Ender on them would cost more than the Braves have ever shown an inclination to part with. And you still have a problem vs RHP at 3B.

Today's declaration of a potential virus vaccine from Pfizer bodes well for MLB.

For the postseason, anyway. It's going to take a long, long time to ramp up manufacturing and distribution. The best-case scenario is something like 12 to 15 million doses available by February, and the ultra-cold storage hasn't even begun to be put in place.

Yes, I imagine teams will be a little more inclined to spend money that may not have otherwise. Good news for the players, but likely doesn't affect our plans very much. If our payroll goes up from the 125 million some projected last week, it's likely the cost of FA's have gone up proportionately.

Throw enough money at it and you'd be surprised how quickly things get done.

Yes. I wish they'd done that. Also, the current results are from a very small sample size. Full stage three testing needs to happen. The best case for wide distribution is still late summer/early fall.

I was assured by a very smart guy that looks like an orangutan that the vaccine would be injected in everyone by the end of the year. Clearly you don't know anything and are just another sheep.

Still figuring out how to get the sunlight inside my body.

I solved that problem the last time someone told me to "stick it where the sun don't shine". Then I told them, "sun shines there now, so...?"

Can send pics if needed.

Feisand said Morton drawing interest from 8-10 teams, Rays are his first choice but wont offer more than 10 million. Could sign quickly.

Wonder if that's 10 million per or just 10 million total. I'd offer a 2 year deal easily.
