Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

I didn't realize that MacPhail is stepping down after the 2021 season and Dombrowski probably slides into MacPhail's role after taking a year to consider the shape of the organization. I imagine the Phillies will still be looking for a GM with Dombrowski's input so that the hire won't be "someone else's guy."

Keith Law is really high on Dahl. Lists him at the top of the non-tenders and would have had him in an updated version of his top 40 available FAs.

Any OFer that bats LHed makes sense for the Braves because they need one. The only question is how much production can they afford. Hopefully they can afford something better than a gamble on Dahl staying healthy, which is something he has never been able to do.

If the Braves only have like $3M for their Markakis replacement, then Dahl is a pretty good option. He can fake it as an everyday player for while, then move into a platoon with someone like Riley or Duvall.

I would be in favor of Dahl as long as another move is made.

If there is no DH, the Braves need 2 bats. Riley can play 3B and showed pretty well in LF, so he can be used in either spot to "see what he can do" with another ~400 PAs. Each of those bats must combine to cover these requirements:

- the RHH Ozuna replacement
- an OFer
- a LHH that can play everyday until Pache is deemed ready which will move that LHH into a platoon somewhere.

If there is a DH, the Braves need 3 bats. The same restrictions apply, they just have another slot that allows for flexibility (guys like Ozuna and Cruz become much more viable).

There are many permutations that work.

No DH (in my order of preference):

- Turner for 3B, Riley and Joc/Rosario/Dahl/Brantley in the OF with Acuna until Pache is ready
- Bryant for 3B/OF, Riley and Shaw (or similar LHH 3B) at 3B/LF with Acuna in CF until Pache is ready
- Ozuna in LF for 1 season, Riley and Shaw (or similar LHH 3B) at 3B/LF with Acuna in CF until Pache is ready

With DH (in my order of preference):

- Cruz for DH, Riley at 3B, someone like Duvall plus someone like Joc/Rosario/Dahl/Brantley in the OF with Acuna until Pache is ready
- Ozuna for DH, Riley at 3B, someone like Duvall plus someone like Joc/Rosario/Dahl/Brantley in the OF with Acuna until Pache is ready

Dahl isn't a bad option. I trust his previous numbers more than his 2020, since he didn't even have 100 PA. The numbers show he's not a good outfielder, but Coors always makes OFer's seem worse than they actually are.

Fully expect the Mutts to make the biggest play for BOTH Bauer and Springer now that the McCann deal is agreed to because - well, they're the Mutts.

What sucks to think about is that there are some smart fans that Cohen quietly follows on Twitter that will make him understand how much better off they'd be if they signed Springer and then used the money they were going to throw at Bauer to add one of Tanaka or Odorizzi, add Paxton, and add one of Hand or Yates (if not both).

Once again, meddling owners, it never ends well. The decisions should be left to professional baseball people, not an owner who is a fan and gets opinions from "smart fans". The Mets don't even have a GM yet!
