Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

The Rays aren’t trading Snell, just like they didn’t trade Price or Archer until their control was nearly expired.

AA would be foolish to spend prospect capital on another SP after he just spent a huge portion of his payroll space on 2 SPs.

It’s bats and bats from here on out....maybe a value BP arm.

AA spent 11 mil on Smyly, he obviously has to get a bat or multiple ones or that signing looks stupid.

Still think we need one of Greene/MM back. Right now bullpen looks like Smith/Martin/Minter/Dayton/Jackson/Webb/Matzek/Tomlin. Could use someone to push Jackson or Dayton out but that's an okay bullpen in this situation given where money is across baseball. But agree with Scheff that it's all about offense right now, then figure out a bullpen piece or two later on if prices are fair.

Nats and Reds have discussed Suarez.

If AA were to make his first big trade in Atlanta, this would be a good target.

Suarez, like Sonny Gray, has a very reasonable contract (running through 2024) and the Reds are in all of these rumors surrounding trades with those guys. They do have Senzel to take over for Suarez at 3B, but they must be in a world of hurt financially to be even considering moves like these.

That's why it seems so strange to still hear the Braves mentioned when he's discussed. Would've made all the sense in the world had he only signed one, but those people apparently think AA is in a position to keep spending and spending if they think he's got $11 million to "waste" on pitching (signing Smyly for the pen and a handful of early season starts) - even if AA could swing the deal without losing Waters. If he had that kind of money available, there's no way they'd have non-tendered Duvall IMO - if we could afford TWO guys in the pen making $10+ million, we could've EASILY afforded to have Duvall on the bench as the weak side of a platoon.

Are you talking Snell or Suarez? That would be pretty steep for Suarez.

Does seem a little steep, but if that's what it took I think I could live with it.

As good as Suarez' contract is, it's pretty tough to imagine a better fit. If you gave up that kind of a haul for Chapman, Devers, or Ramirez, you'd have to deal with trying to extend them in a couple years. If you traded for Suarez and gave Freeman a 4 year extension you'd have the offensive core locked up through 2025. Even if funds are tight AA would probably be in a position to "nudge" payroll just a bit to give Brantley a 3 year $45 million deal to finish everything off - assuming he and McGuirk have been truthful when they say Liberty gives them the discretion to stretch when the time is right. Though to imagine the time gets more right than with Suarez/Brantley/d'Arnaud/Ozzie following Acuna and Freeman with this rotation.

Should cost something like:

Riley, Waters, Muller, Weigel, and a throw in type of prospect from the lower levels.

I'd do that for Suarez for sure, on a great contract for his age 29-33 age seasons.

I’m the low man on Waters around here, so a package centered around him for a player like Suarez is something I could get behind. The Braves don’t really have any impact prospects anymore outside of Pache, so any deals moving forward will be a quantity of lottery tickets.

The main advantage AA has is a bunch of post hype prospects with some MLB experience like Riley, Wright and Touki...though I would be hesitant to trade Touki with those statcast measurables.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but we fired our bullpen coach, Marty Reed, and replaced him with a younger guy from the Astros organization, Drew French. We also promoted Bobby Magallanes to be our second assistant hitting coach. All other coaches are coming back next season.

The Reds are interesting. If there is no DH they really have a log jam in the OF.
Senzel isn't a CF IMO.

Are they willing to reset?

If they are losing Bauer and trading Gray plus losing money, then a reset may be in the cards.

They were rumored to be a landing spot for a free agent SS. Would they be interested in Shewmake?

That Nats are also interested in Realmuto. They’re going to be in financial hell soon

This is the last year of the Scherzer deal, i could see it with Realmuto. They dont really have a ton of big contracts except for Corbin and Strasburg. Gonna take a whooper to keep Soto in town though.

The reds are also talking Castillo in trade talks. After trading Iglesias, then possibly losing Bauer, Gray, Castillo it’d make sense
