Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Rosenthal:

“Names possibly going to Rockies include LHP Austin Gomber, 1B Luken Baker, OF Jhon Torres. Return also might include RHP Jake Woodford or RHP Angel Rondón. Exact package not confirmed.”

That’s ... not much at all.

If that's all it will take it's certainly frustrating. But we first need to hear the entire deal, including what happens with the opt outs.

Also, isn't Arenado very average outside of Coors?

Well I’ll wait for the details to be confirmed but if they got close to 50M cash and only sent some of those prospects then to me this all but confirms the Braves are cash strapped as it would seem that would of been a perfect trade for us to make.
Will be interesting to see what was sent and how much

If we pay 30+ to Arenado and we don’t have that money for Freeman probably he walk away.

Story for Swanson + is a possibility. I am not sure if Shewmake will be ready by 2022.

I don’t see things that way at all. Hell, Bowman and DOB don’t do much, but they’ve confirmed Atlanta has money.

Boob: The #STLCards are not giving up any of their top 5 prospects in the trade. Their top prospect likely would be OF Jhon Torres, their No. 9 prospect.

The 50 million makes Arenado’s deal 6/150. So 25 a year, not 30+.
Yes you are right but we need to see the whole deal and how they are going to pay those 50 million. Maybe 15 this year and less the following ones. Braves never pay 25 millions for 1 player.

I really like the idea of Swanson for Story. Then we may have some money to add Ozuna.

Why would a rebuilding team want Swanson, a guy who will be 27 in two weeks and only has two years of control left? They’ll want prospects for him.

If the Rockies are rebuilding, how does 2 years of Swanson have any value to them?

I wrote a few post before:

+ means some prospects...

So we have plenty of prospects to make a quantity over quality trade which appears to be the trade of choice for most of these teams.

We actually “need” to move some of these pitchers.

Maybe Arenado waived his opt out, or pushed it back a year or more.

The details on this trade will obviously determine if it’s a deal we would have wanted AA to make.

Based on the limited info we have, I have to assume the deal includes $50M spread out over the rest of the years he remains with the Cards.

So they got him for either 1/25 or 6/150. That contract is not too bad after shaving $50M off the top. I still don’t think that’s something we can realistically have expected AA to take on.

I’m not exactly saying I wanted us to take on this contract. There are many trades that appear to be there for the taking without giving up top 100 guys.

This certainly appears to be the case. The one constant this off season has been that any team able to assume salary has made out very well in trades.

This is why I didn’t like splurging so early on Smyly.

If I’m reading this correctly, he not only didn’t waive his post-2021 opt-out, but he’s also being granted a second, post-2022 opt-out opportunity in exchange for waiving his no-trade provision.

Arenado has a full no-trade clause, though Rosenthal and Nick Groke of The Athletic reported earlier this week that he is likely to waive it in order to join the Cardinals. The five-time All-Star also has an opt-out clause in the seven-year, $234MM extension he signed with the Rockies before the 2019 campaign. But Arenado would still be able to opt out after 2021, he’d get an additional opt-out after ’22 and he would keep his full no-trade clause, Rosenthal tweets.
