Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Morosi: Source: The #Rockies are paying Nolan Arenado's $35 million salary this season; $15 million is owed to the Cardinals in this calendar year, with the remaining $20 million deferred. @MLB @MLBNetwork

A free year. We could have traded for him AND gotten Someone like Cruz AND signed back Melancon and Greene.

Dang.

AND owe him huge cash ONLY if he’s terrible and decides not to opt out. There is literally nothing but downside in that contract after this season.

I’m very happy AA didn’t make that trade.

Would you pay him to suck after this year if you knew we would have signed him, Ozuna, and one of Melancon or Greene and won the World Series in 2021?

What are the odds he is going to opt out? How many of these players actually use the opt outs on the wrong side of 30. He's already making 35 million with many years left on the deal. Plus he got a year tacked on. That contract can get ugly fast.

There is no way he is opting out. Even if he has an MVP season. Make 35 million until 34 then 32 million and 27 million the next two years. He would be a fool to try and top that deal. Only the angels would be dumb enough to pay him that much for his decline years.

I will say, in the short term it should work out well for the Cardinals. The fact that they got the Rockies to pay his salary this year is a big bonus.

They will surely benefit. He is a great player. We would have benefitted. But that contract is a risk and we just don’t take risks like that.

So it’s looking more and more like no DH.
What’s your opinion of how it affects the Braves and Ozuna?
I’d say the chances of us signing Marcell are lower then Turner at this point.
I feel like he will end up in the AL since they are most likely the only ones that will offer a long term deal.

Arenado guarantees you nothing. that's the thing. you push chips in and give yourself guaranteed high long-term risk for not guaranteed big success. it's a huge risk for a team with the Braves' payroll.

You can’t explain that better! If we bring back Ozuna, Melancon and improve the bench. We have a great chance to win!

No because I’m not one of those mouth breathers who puts more emphasis on winning 4 extra games in October in exchange for future seasons of noncompetitive teams. I’d much rather be entertained watching the Braves play every October.

You mean guaranteeing the payroll is sunk for 3-5 years to boost the WS odds by 3% isn’t a good risk/reward ratio?

But, but, but...flags fly forever! Flags are all that matter! Just ask all those Marlins fans who get to spend all that time staring at 2 WS flags rather than watching their team compete.

Bad example - the people that were fans when they won them are the only people going to games in Miami now.

I think we can live with Ozuna in Lf for a year. We would have Ender available for late game defensive replacement.

There's a decent chance Arenado opts out if he has another 5-6 WAR type of season in 2021. That would put him at age 30 with a remaining contract of 6/179. Consider that Rendon got 7/245 after his age 29 season, and I think it's safe to assume Arenado would be looking at a $200 million contract as well.

Maybe. But the dumb teams are becoming fewer and fewer. The angels already signed Rendon so they can’t double down on stupid. I personally wouldn’t take that chance.

Honestly, I don't think Arenado's deal is that bad.

I still think the Cards should be more worried about Goldy. I'd rather pay Arenado 15m at Age 36 then pay Goldy 26.

I think it'd be more likely we bring back Duvall on a cheaper contract to be late inning replacement for Duvall...

But last season the owners and players played this whole back and forth thing as well. I think they will come to an agreement on the season.
