Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Downs was a top 5 easily...his power #s in the minors were off the charts....

The thing with the Dodgers is their scouting and development is so fckn good you don’t notice a top prospect missing because they replace them with another too tier talent. They are the cream of the crop in that department.

Oh and it helps things that they have a $300m a year TV deal where ours is what? $20m?

And Downs was going to get a chance to play where? SS? Nope. 2B? Nope.

Don't misunderstand - I'm all about trading prospects for significant upgrades, but there don't seem to be any of those deals available right now. If AA isn't able to turn Riley/Waters/Wright/Wilson/others into Matt Chapman, Jose Ramirez, or Eugenio Suarez you keep them until you can - or until they force their way into the big club's lineup.

Depth is your friend.

If this is the case that deal should've already taken place.
Not necessarily. Before Ozuna, there was an outfield hole so trading Riley and Waters wouldn’t exactly plug that hole, especially when Atlanta had plans to at least give Waters a look in ST if Ozuna didn’t work out (that’s a huge part of why Chipper was brought in and I’ve heard that from two good sources), so it would make sense that AA wanted to get Ozuna in place before moving forward with any possible trades. Nothing is guaranteed but the logic is there.

Just take the L, man.

He got the salary at 12 million this year for a reason. Puig could be gotten pretty cheap I’d think at a couple of million. He probably had to wait and see what Ozuna was gonna cost to see what his budget was gonna look like before doing anything else.

Technically, couldn't they sign Freeman to an extension with a reduced salary this season?

Gomez:

I heard that the possible trade of Jose Ramirez to the Braves, would involve the following players:

- RHP Joel De La Cruz
- C Shea Langeliers
- 3B Austin Riley
- OF Drew Waters

None of those players will amount to half the player Ramirez is, probably even combined. You do it and then you call a lawyer.

Dietrich as a bat only player would be nice, but didn't we already sign Panda, or was that a minor league deal?

Sandoval is a minor league deal, as is Adrianze. Both will likely be NRIs in spring training and probably will get legitimate shots for the big league team.

There is still quite a bit of work to do, so I hope DOB is right about the $10M+ to spend.

I think I’d like to see the addition of 2-3 more bats:

LHH OF (or a RHH with reverse splits like Puig)
Backup SS (Hech is fine)
Another RHH corner player (only if there’s a DH)

Maybe a backup catcher. Maybe a value add to the BP if a guy like Greene or MM ends up being very cheap.

The Ramirez deal seems unlikely since the Indians appear to be done shedding payroll, but maybe AA was waiting to pull the trigger until he knew Turner wouldn’t be at 3b. I seriously doubt it happens, but I also doubted Ozuna would get 4+ years. A deal centered around Riley/Waters/Lango is definitely something I’d be all for though.

Almonte is a non-guaranteed deal, Camargo and Jackson are expendable, still hopes of dumping/trading Inciarte. All of those (26) pitchers on the 40 are there for reasons other than just depth. Some here still clamoring for Duvall. Highly doubt that one tho one never knows. Just for note tho Duvall career batting ave: 233. Pederson career BA: 230.

Did someone just quote career overall BA when comparing Pederson to Duvall as if that’s in any way a useful comparison?

Agree wholeheartedly that there is still work to do. The bench, as is, is pretty paltry. There are still some decent options out there. No world-beaters, but I'm intrigued by Brad Miller. Bullpen also needs to shake out.
