Do we extend Ozuna to a extra year to save some millions?

I would imagine AA is at least talking to his agent about it, and that’s probably why we haven’t seen any news about the Braves picking up his option since it’s such a no brainer.

I think it's more relevant than your cherry picked 2019-present time frame... considering Soler is older and is likely declining quicker at this point.

Fun to dream on Soto, but I don't see any way the Braves end up being the highest bidder. Here in NY, there are two owners who have deep pockets and are desperate to sign him. Cohen seems the most desperate and will go to any price. Should be fascinating to see the bidding war play out.

Well presumably Ozuna would be getting a big raise so it wouldnt save us any money. The only thing that would make sense to me extending Ozuna now is if we paid him MORE this year. Something like 2 years 50 million replacing his current option. So 9 million more this year to go with 25 million next year which is essentially extending him for 1 year 34 million. Ozuna seems to like it in Atlanta so I think he might be open to it when he could be looking at 3 years 100 million if he repeats his performance in 2025. He has been very inconsistent in his career so we have to be prepared for him to turn back into a pumpkin at some point. I would be cool with a 1 year extension but I dont know that I want anything longer unless its with a massive discount.
The extensions AA has been giving out have been converting options for pitchers into guaranteed money while simultaneously moving real cash from this year into 2026 without changing the luxury tax hit (which may have been squashed by the league as a move to game the system). The pitchers agree to take less cash this year in exchange for guaranteed cash in the future because pitchers know their careers are risky.
There is no such calculus for Ozuna. Any extension for him would only benefit the Braves if he were to sign something like $10M in 2025 plus $22M in 2026. That pushes real 2025 cash into 2026 while keeping the luxury hit the same. Is that a move worth making? So we really want a pure DH for even longer? Maybe, and the fact the option hasn’t been picked up yet tells me talks are underway.

Yeah, i'd be surprised if Soto isnt playing in NY next year. Braves technically could do that contract but i cant see AA being the high bidder even though Soto would make so much sense for the Braves.

I know him and Acuña are bff so the only way would be if that helped draw him here. He’s seems like the highest bidder type of guy though. AA is clearing money though so we’ll see.

Yes, because Soler has largely been a DH, which tanks his value. But we were talking about offense. Hernandez is also a bad defender. He just so happens to not be as bad as Soler.
Again, they are effectively the same player except Hernandez gives you better defense (but still below average). That isn't worth paying an extra 2-3 years and 50-60 million dollars over what we were going to pay Soler.

Some think HSK will take a 1 year deal with a player option to prove his value after his major shoulder surgery. I could see AA biting on that. A guy with that little power having shoulder surgery isnt a good sign though. Might scare off a lot of teams. I have heard HSK prefers to play SS and might pick his team based on who lets him play that position. No one has a bigger vacancy than us.

I never said I wanted to give Hernandez anything… I don’t want the guy. I don’t want Soler either with Ozuna here… but they are not virtually the same player.
I said they were basically the same player and noted that Hernandez was better defensively (though still a bad defender).
So very similar hitters, both bad at defense, but one of them is a good bit worse defensively. That Seems pretty friggin similar to me.
And honestly, Hernandez is pretty likely to be a primary DH going forward. Which would mean evaluating them as hitters is likely far more relevant.
I find it humorous when I get accused of arguing too much by people who do the exact same thing. The main difference is when I'm part of it my online stalkers come out of the woodwork to send shots at me, and then we get 2 pages of that discussion.
Everyone understands Teoscar is better than Soler, just like everyone understands it would be foolish to jettison Soler to make room for Teoscar at a higher price.
