Looking towards 2025

I guess it’s still unclear which international class he is going to be in 2024 or 2025… he’d have to sign before the middle of December to get in 2024. What’s our pool situation for 2024 and 2025? Gotta think we may have a tough time convincing him on the east coast and without other Japanese players. Maybe he wants to be his own Japanese star by himself somewhere… I dunno. But damn this is one international guy I’d love to have.

The only reason I'd think he's so eager to play in America is to join the Dodgers asap with Ohtani & Yamamoto, especially after watching them win the WS in their first year with the Dodgers and while they're in their prime. Barf.

And they’ll get him cheap bc he has to sign a minor league deal.

The more I read about Crochet, the more I think he's a prime trade/extend target for AA.

Crochet will current be paid something like $3M in 2025 at the age of 26, then a final year of arb in 2026 at the age of 27. Part of the drama surrounding him at the deadline was that he wouldn't pitch in the postseason without an extension, so he is the ideal candidate to lock up through his 20s.

I would hate to see Baldwin traded, but someone like Crochet is the type of target that would make it acceptable.

That’s what I was thinking when I saw the article today about the White Sox wanting a legit position prospect back. I’d hate to trade Baldwin but that’s the kind of player you trade him for. Plus we have Murphy for the next 4 years and I think he will be fine not being in a platoon.

Braves sign Yohel Pozo C/DH from the A’s and Charles Le Blanc 3B/2B from the Angels to minor league deals.

They’re just AAA fodder, but that whole roster needs an overhaul outside of Baldwin, Nacho, and maybe JP Martinez.

LeBlanc is a good signing. Played SS in college but not much time there in the pros. Played pretty well for Miami in 2022. Strikes out too much, but he's probably better than Luke Williams.

I took a look at Pozo's stats. He had 77 PAs for the Rangers in 2021. Solid power numbers the last two years in Las Vegas (A's AAA affiliate). That team hit 232 HRs, so maybe their home park is hitter-friendly. Sported an 0.011 isoOBP last season. Career isoOBP is 0.034 so we know he's up there hacking.

From Bowden, so the grains of salt are Perseids-sized, but:

It’ll be fascinating to see which team he chooses. I’m just not buying the narrative that it’ll be the Dodgers. Based on what I’m hearing, I think the Padres, Rays, Mets and Braves are all more likely to sign Sasaki than the Dodgers — and several other teams will be in the mix.

I know the Braves had at least one big pre-commitment for the January 2025 class, but obviously Sasaki would obviate that.

Was just about to come post this... but my heart sank when I saw it was from Bowden a bit... dude is worse than Nightengale.

If AA makes a flurry of moves to gather up a bunch of pool money we can start talking about Ohtani 2.0. Until then, it’s probably wise to assume the odds are the same as they were with Ohtani 1.0.
